Hi All,

So I've got a brand spanking new Velo Orange triple crankset that
needs a 118 spindle.
The frame has 68 mm BB shell. I use friction mode shifters.
I have two shimano UN5x cartridge bottom rackets neither the perfect size:
one is 68x116, other 73x118

The question is can I use a spacer in either one? If so, which one
would work best with a spacer?

Or if somebody wants to trade my brand new 73x118 UN54 bottom bracket
for what I need, a similar cartridge BB but in 68x118 size...

Thanks,
Carlos

Carlos,

Use the left-hand/non-drive side cup from the 68x116 BB on the
73x118mm BB, and then put a 2.5mm spacer on the drive-side of the
73x118mm BB.

Carlos, I've done what Jim is recommending, no problems.
For a spacer, you can buy one,
However, I've used a 2.5 aluminum spacer from an old garbage 9 speed
cassette (maybe 8 speed?), you have to remove the three pins from the
back and take the cassette apart to get to the spacers in between the
cogs. You have to file down the splines, then it slips right on.
Measure it with Vernier calipers.
Or buy one for $1! Ha ha!

Thanks for the replies, I had tried using the plastic cup from the
68x116 on the 73x118 but it does not fit, I know it is odd but it
doesn't work, slightly different BB models. I'll try playing with
spacer/s and see how it goes. I may end up buying a new BB, after all,
cartridge BB are ~$20 and last for a long time.
