I had a free day up in Arnold, CA. The forest dirt-roads in the area had me wanting to explore. I used ridewithgps to make a route that would have been a 24-mile loop. I sync'd it to my Wahoo Elemnt and I was good to go...
About 6 miles in, the road got extremely narrow and overgrown, so it clearly wasn't something that was getting regular use, even from hikers. I walked my bike and pushed branches out of the way, but it was getting kind of sketchy. I was only going to go a little bit further before turning back to the forest-road section that preceded. Then, my decision was made for me as my 'road' reached a locked gate featuring several threats of violence to trespassers. I happily abandoned my loop, and backtracked through the narrow branchy section. The Wahoo complained that I was going off course by going backwards. I tried to figure out how to make the Wahoo display my path so I could use it to make sure I was making all the right turns in reverse. I looked for a button to reverse the existing route. None of that seemed to work. The Wahoo placed me correctly on the map, but it didn't know where I intended to go, so stopped giving me directions or a path. Fortunately, the Elemnt app on my phone had my ride displayed and my position, so I could pull out my phone and confirm that I was still on the black line of my previous path. It worked and I was never at significant risk of being lost, but as a solo rider, it did feel a little spooky.
For future adventures and exploration, is there a way to 'turn back' on an arbitrary Wahoo route, so it leads you back to where you started? Or should I plan all my exploration routes as out-and-backs?
