Hi Everyone,

I'm new to SFR but have really enjoyed the few rides that I've done with the group this year.  I'm planning on doing the double brevet this upcoming weekend and want to make sure that I've got the best fit possible on my bike/ determine whether I would be better served by a new bike.

A friend recommended Volagi so up until this point, I've focused my research on their bikes.  The issue is that I've now gone to three different shops and each shop has recommended a different size of the same bike for me.  I've been on the 47, 50 & 53 and it is honestly disconcerting that each shop is sizing me differently on the same exact bike.  I am not sure if this is typical or not, since road riding is a relatively new venture.

Can anyone recommend a bike fitter/shop that they really trust to size properly.

Thanks in advance,
Rachel

Rachel,

Welcome!   One question -- are you comfortable enough on the bike you have?  It can be hard on your body to change equipment, especially if you are suddenly using different muscles, right before a long ride like the one this coming weekend.  It might be best to stay with what you have and try it out on a couple of shorter rides to make sure your assessment of whether it's working is based on fit (vs. just being the pain of being on a bike for two days).

Re: fitters.  Thomas Siemann in El Cerrito is extremely thorough as a bike fitter.  However, he isn't selling bikes.  If you're looking to buy a bike, I'd go with Susie's recommendation (I think it's a shop) or if you're in the East Bay, Endless Cycles in El Cerrito has a great fitter there named Karen.  I've gone to Thomas and Karen and been very happy -- both are cyclists and also have some physiology background (i.e. can help fit bike to deal with chronic injury, etc).

If you're looking for a Volagi, I know there's a dealer in Pleasanton and am sure someone (Greg?  Barb?) can tell you where they are.  Lucky you!!!

See you on the ride next weekend!  Enjoy!

Pleasanton dealer is Crank2 Performance. They seem like a very solid shop, and (I think) were the first Volagi dealer in the Bay Area. They are definitely known or thoughtful fitting, and are also specialists in tandems. I know they always allow for lengthy test rides before purchase.

Thanks!

I am comfortable on the bike that I've been riding overall I have made a couple of adjustments that seem to be alleviating the majority of the lower back pain I was having.  The main one is that I'm now riding in my drops both up & down hill as opposed to only down hill. That's really helped out with the back pain I was experiencing when I was riding up hill.

I do think that bringing my current bike to a great fitter is a smart move because they should be able to check me out & let me know how I look on that frame as a starting point.  Thanks for the recommendations.  I'll start calling around tomorrow morning.

See you this upcoming weekend.  Thanks again for the input.

The guys at Montano Velo in Oakland are superb as well! Ask for Jonathan or Jason Montano.

Cheers,

Jenny

I second Susie's suggestion: Ari at Bespoke in SF is amazing.

I've sent 3 friends to him and all have been more than pleased.  As for me, a year after getting my custom Seven (from a shop in Chicago) I moved out here and noticed pains while climbing.  Ari took about 4 hours to do my fitting and probably spent a good hour just on my feet fixing hot spots and my arch problems (which trickled into some of my climbing knee pain).  He made a few tweaks to my seat position and lowered my handle bars and I've been set in that position for the last 2-3 years and gotten me through my first brevet and all the way through a pain free 508.

Bike Fit in Los Altos/Peninsula:

For those of you who would like to enhance the quality of riding long distances by getting a bike fit, I'd like to recommend Mike Boester from Undiscovered Country located in Los Altos off of Foothill Blvd and 280/85 on the Peninsula.  I went there 6 months ago, with my new cycling shoes and speed play pedals/cleats, and after completing the initial questionnaire, Mike spent 2 hours plus setting me up just right.  He said that when I ride: "the bike should almost be unnoticeable!"

After the fitting, I went for a little test spin around the block, and after my feedback, Mike made some more adjustments, and off I went again.  He asked me to return after I've been riding the bike with the new setup for about a week to provide feedback and make further "fine tunes" if needed.  And best part of all, it isn't as expensive as other places charge for this service.

Good news is that I've definitely improved my speed and comfort since then, and it's a lot more fun to ride multiple days in a row.

Mike Boester has over 25 years of fitting experience and works with all types of riders, including race teams.  I recommend him because he's highly concerned about getting YOU the BEST bike fit possible.

PS:  Another cool thing about the store is that if you're in the area, you can just drop in for coffee, nature break, shower, chat, rest, etc.  They also have Full Carbon with Ultegra bicycle rentals available if you have friends in town who would like to ride but don't want to bring their own bikes... For the weekend, it's $90.00 pick up Friday - return Monday!  For the whole week, it's $154.00.  Super Awesome!  For a fee, they'll also deliver the bikes to your house.

I couldn't be happier to have these guys in my back yard.  I'll be stopping in a lot more from now on.

Andrea
