This is a message that is difficult to send.

Peter Grace was riding our 200km today and early in the ride, he was struck and killed by a vehicle. At this point, no official determination has been made and the incident is still under investigation. There is nothing else that can be shared at this point because nothing else is known or has been released by the authorities.

For those that knew Peter, you will know the extent of the loss here. Peter was the kindest, most supportive and giving person you would ever expect to meet. I did have the chance to briefly speak with his wife in person today. She wanted to make sure that others in our club knew just how much Peter enjoyed randonneuring and the culture in our club. Peter would volunteer often and would do so for hard to fill volunteer tasks.

This loss will hit each of us in different ways, and at different times. Out of respect for Peter, his family, and his good friends, I am hoping each of us is allowed to find our own way to process this without others pushing opinions of what we should do or how we should do it. I would also like to ask that we not engage in speculation about what happened, none of us knows and speculation without facts is pointless and does no one any good.

I am so sorry to have to report this to you all.

Thanks Rob, very sad indeed and shocked.  We volunteered the Mendo 600 workers ride and did a short ride to the turn around from the camp site.  We talked and enjoyed the company. I’ll miss his energy and passion.

Very saddened by the news.

I had a brief interaction with Peter during the 2022 Mendocino Coast 600k while I was volunteering at the Indian Creek campground. (That was also the last time I talked with Metin). It was a cold night and he was holding well for someone new to randonneuring, and even helping others. He let us know how appreciative he was of the support and it seems he actually volunteered for that very position the next year.

I am glad that volunteering gave me the opportunity to interact with him and have something to remember him by.

I met Peter thru my local club early in my very short riding career and he’s just the kindest person who had such a great sense of humor. He was an incredible athlete (being the oldest person to complete the Everesting at the time) and an even better preparer when it came to bigger events. He was kind enough to help me complete my first bigger rides (400k and 600k). I dare say my path to longer distance riding might not have taken off without his kindness at the start.

His preparation for PBP was so thorough; printing out others’ data to study the best strategy and interview PBP finishers to get their advices and ask questions. He was ecstatic when his daughter decided to go support him at PBP. Unfortunately he had a close encounter with a deer on a ride a few weeks before that fractured some ribs so he could not ride at PBP. But being such a positively person he decide to still go and make a great trip with his daughter and support the rest of the riders (SFR had over 100 members attending, which is about 1/4 from the US). He might not have ridden like he wanted to but he was definitely part of the great experience (perhaps best part too)

I am grateful that I got to know Peter and experience how generous he was as a friend and how wonderful he was as a person. I know there are others that knew him better that are hurting more and I don’t even want to imagine how difficult it is for his family. I am still bouncing between sadness and disbelieve and try to recall best memories with Peter. It seem the best thing to do is to celebrate what an incredible live he’s lived.

Peter reached out to me before PBP with questions about getting ready for the event. We spent a while talking on the phone and I offered to be available to assist his daughter while he was out riding. That plan didn’t work out when he was injured, but he and his daughter went to France anyway to support the other riders. We met in Loudeac as that control was closing down and again spent some time chatting.

Peter and I never rode together, but as others have noted he was a very gracious person who obviously loved the sport.

I’m glad to have gotten to know him, even if for a short time.

Hi Rob,

A friend is trying to put an album together and will share when it’s ready. (Perhaps others will be able to add to it as well) In the mean time I dug out these photos from the SFR event I posted on strava as tribute to him. That’s Peter with Kirsten at the finish of Mendocino 600k 2022 and Peter on the Hopland 400k 2022.

Hi Rob,

This is such an unfortunate tragedy.  I've known Peter for a number of years as we both live in Brisbane and have done numerous rides together.  I don't have the right words to convey how devastated a lost this has been to our town and cycling community.  I was txt messaging with Peter literally just last month soliciting advice on parking at the Presidio since he has done so many rides starting from there.  A person of such heart and willingness to give is gone too soon.  Our hearts and prayers go out to his family.

RIP bro...
