I am looking for a place to get a bike fit to make adjustments to my current bike and possibly purchase a new one. I would appreciate your recommendations. I live on the Peninsula (Menlo Park) and will drive up to ~ an hour.  Thank you!

If you haven't already, and for folks that don't know, you can also search the mailing list to see previous discussions on bike fit and other topics:

Good luck,

I just had a fit with Chris Norris at Bicycle Outfitters in Los Altos.  I was impressed with him and was happy with the fit.  He is a no nonsense kind of guy and very efficient.  I am going to take my wife to him for her bike fit and once I get my new bike, he said he would be happy to dial it in.  Just call the store (65--948-8092) and they can help you schedule an appointment.

Every time someone asks a question about a bike fit, you ask them to search historic postings. You have done this a few times. Why? The purpose of this forum is to facilitate bike related conversations and relationships. Especially since the search function on google groups is worthless.
Bike fitters come and go. I am interested in riders opinions on this topic. Please don’t discourage people from participating.
Thank you.

Vlad,

I think your response to Eric Walstad's suggestion is a bit harsh.  While it may be true that some of the threads in a search within a group are a bit dated, in this case it still has some recent info for people to consider.  Personally, I think what Eric is saying is that there is a function that some in our group may not know about, and that it is a tool that may answer some questions.  I don't see how what Eric suggests discourages people from participating in the Google group.

I do agree with you, however, that it is good to get more of the many people in this SFR group to participate, and, frankly, this group isn't nearly as active as it used to be.  I'd like to see a more active SFR Google group.

My suggestion to all is to use the search function when you have a question to see if it has been addressed previously, as you may find answers more quickly, but, after doing so, if you seek more info, by all means, ask away!  This group, in my experience, is very knowledgeable, and supportive of its participants.  Frankly, it's one of the reasons I joined SFR, even though I don't live in the bay area.

Vlad,

I found Eric's post to be quite helpful, and also very even toned, lacking in any opprobrium, and certainly not discouraging anyone from further discussion on this and/or any other topic. I'm not at all sure that it was a post that deserved to be called out in this way.

Anne-French,
To educate yourself when picking a fitter, there are many levels of evaluation. Here is one example that Mike's Bikes offers. I got a Level 2 after buying a new bike and it served me well for the Hokkaido 1200. No pain anywhere. All of our fitters go through a certification process and will travel to your nearest store, Palo Alto.

Good luck,
colin

I have been going to Allen at clubhouse velo for quite a while and he does excellent fits.  You can see his process on YouTube as well.

Rob,
I disagree with you.  The best way to advertise capability of a platform such as google groups is in a routine reminder to the membership.
When this reminder appears in conjunction with a question that was asked,  the  message of the “go search the archives” is unmistakable.

Even is the search capability was functional (which is not) it still sends a negative message

I've used Paragon Studio in the upper Richmond district in San Francisco.  Brian is knowledgeable and very approachable to find a fit that fits your needs.  I've returned to cycling after nearly 16 years of absence.  I made an early retirement for better health. After a failed first attempt for a carbon bike (thinking lighter is better) the second success came on a more desired bike to return into cycling.

Initially I used AI fitting but found that it's very one dimensional and through past cycling experience (Greg Lemond times) I really needed an outside eye to see through 80% or so the AI fitting could provide and get better comfort first and perhaps some performance second.

My wife paid for the fitting from Brian as my BDay gift and chose for the full fit which could last 2.5 hrs a session. The session started with a physical assessment then interviewing cycling background and any ailments you might have.  From there it first went to the shoe/positioning of cleats before starting your fitting on your bike.  As I mentioned, the AI fit is very one dimensional and without much ailment, that might be fine. The fitter can see you in 3 dimensional and address you as a rider with the  goal of comfort first with any positional advantage you and your bike can tolerate for performance.  We started off w/ 2mm washer on my left pedal to address my stance to stabilize my hip and stabilize my top of my knees from caving in at top.  The rest included bringing my bar down from 40mm to 38mm (yeap like the original bike I had back in 1986) and change in seat position/angles.  I've been back two other times as the fit included physical exercise/stretches to further improve your fit and performance (comfort) on the bike.  My most recent visit replaced the original seat, a Specialized Power saddle to a more broader Pro Stealth saddle because although I understood the fit and equipment used (a 2017 Pinarello F10 purchased used from original ProCloset offering) that specific seat just didn't fit my body (i didn't want to blame equipment for my poor physical conditioning).

The takeaway is that fitting isn't cheap but the investment to find a balanced, comforting and best performance fitting for you to produce your best is well worth your next set of wheel upgrades.  Brian is very flexible and the session felt comfortable and personal.  I was never push for any products and the fit report was very useful as I'm using it to fit into my second bike (I acquired a 1986- 87 Fuso built by the late Dave Moulton [English US builder but not the UK folding bike builder]).

Happy cycling w/ 2026 goal to join at least ONE brevet from SFR and lofty goal to return to climbing MT Tam.

I had a really terrific experience with Tim Jannisse t...@cyclinguntapped.com

Tim's superpower is that he is a practicing sports physical therapist so for me he incorporated a bike fit with PT exercises to overcome some serious hip pain issues I was having at the time. After working with Tim, I did 7 double centuries and 9,000+ miles in 2025 pain-free.

I continue to be very grateful for Tim's expertise!

Hi Vlad,

Thanks for letting me know my message came across with a negative tone to you, that you think the list archive search is useless, and that suggesting members use it is effectively stifling discussion on this list. That was not my intention.

You are right, I have recommended searching the list archives a few times: this thread we are on now, and this one and this one. I found those by searching the list archives. I haven't done it *every time* someone asks about a bike fit, as you said, but I think that was just hyperbole. If you search the list archives like this, you'll see that there are also times where I have given my own feedback on the subject, as have many, many others. There's a ton of great stuff in the list archives and I disagree that search function is completely worthless. I think it is pretty good. I used it to find the information I linked to, above.

I believe it is good form in general to try to answer a question oneself before asking for help from others. I assume that the original poster did this, although they did not say where they searched or what they tried in their post. So, I pointed them to the list archives with a URL that searched for "bike fit" and returned some on-topic responses by myself and others. I see that as a positive contribution.

I would 2nd Dave’s recommendation of Tim Jannisse. The added feature is that he’s mobile and will meet you at your house some place that’s convenient

Along with bike fit, another measurement to consider-- your optimal crank arm length.
