Hi:
Â
I want to highlight what Kim Freitas did on the Mendo Coast brevet. I was one of four riders to start that day and would not have finished without her support. It was a very hard event, especially on the first day where I constantly battled rain, wind and other challenges. A lot of the other volunteers are listed because they were supporting a Populaire on Sunday. Kim made the 600k event happen.
Â
She met us at the start, signed us in, took our drop bags in her car, splitting out items we might want at hotels we reserved, dropped some items at two different hotels in Cloverdale (writing a note of encouragement to be given to me upon check-in) , set-up camp in the Anderson Valley, texted/called us throughout the day to make sure we were OK, woke up from her rest when I arrived at Indian Creek to make sure I was well fed, warm and ready to take on the last 36 miles of a 260-mile day that ended in Cloverdale. On Sunday, she was also at the finish control with my drop bag after supporting the other riders who got to Indian Creek throughout the night and early morning. She cheered my arrival even though she wasn’t assigned to the finish control. It was as if I had done something special for her!
Â
I have never felt such comprehensive support by an SFR volunteer at any previous brevet.
Â
Thank you, Kim!

1. The SFR Adventure Series kicks off for 2024
Â
On June 22nd, SFR will host the first brevet in the SFR Adventure Series for 2024. Permits are all completed with the NPS and the roster is growing for the Marin Mountains 200km brevet. If you'd like to earn the Roy Ross Award in 2024 like these guys did in 2023, then the Marin Mountains 200km is the place to start.
Â
What is the Adventure Series you ask? The SFR Adventure Series was created by Max Poletto and is composed of a 200, 300, 400 and 600km brevets. The routes attempt to take the quietest roads and as a result each route includes some gravel roads or other unpaved segments. All of these routes are up another level on the scenery scale. You can read about the Adventure Series and all the routes by clicking here.
Â
You can sign up for these brevets (and any future 2024 SFR brevet) by going here.
Â
NB: To earn the Roy Ross Award, you can substitute no more than one brevet with the RUSA perm version of the same route. All Adventure Series Brevets are ACP sanctioned and if you substitute a Perm, you'll need to finish that perm using ACP timing. You can earn RUSA gravel kms, but no bonus time is added for gravel kms.
Â
Here is the full Adventure Series brevet calendar:
Marin Mountains 200km: June 22nd
Old Caz 300km: July 6th
King Ridge 400km: July 20th
Orr Springs 600km: August 3rd
Â
2. Checking your SFR membership status and registrations for 2024
Â
Thanks to Eric Walstad (Yay! Eric!!!), we now have a means for you to check on the status of your brevet registrations and membership.
Â
To get a listing of what upcoming events you have registered for, and where your membership stands:
Â
1. send an email to my....@sfrandonneurs.org from the same address you used to join/register for SFR.
Â
2. Give the system 5 minutes to return an email that lists your events and membership status.
Â
Here is an example of the email message you'll get back:

5. Volunteer Corner: Kelley Prebil
This issue of the SFR News, we have a few thoughts on volunteering from Kelley Prebil, who has become a frequent volunteer for SFR, often taking on the harder volunteer roles for us.
Â
I've been volunteering for various organizations for most of my life in areas that interest me. I joined SFR in 2019 when I started randonneuring after meeting Ken Emerson on a mutual friend's annual Hamilton birthday ride (note: last time I ever make friends with anyone on Hamilton). Volunteering for rando rides is a lot easier than other volunteer jobs I've had since a lot of the volunteering doesn't require physically being anywhere or even for long periods of time.Â
Â
I've done Event Coordinator and DORC a lot as both can be done before the ride (Event Coodinator) or while out of town (both). I'm usually an o'dark thirty bird so Start Control has been an easy volunteer job that only requires half an hour of my day. Best thing about Start Control is that you can still do the route the day of and just start 10 minutes after everyone else! I don't believe in the "giving back" concept since that implies that you get to take before you give. For routes that I'm not necessarily interested in, but possibly available around then, volunteering for the ride is a great way to help out with rando rides.Â
Â
I'm also interested in trying to take some burden off of Rob Hawks, since his dedication to SFR means that more often than not, he will fill up the vacancies. Rob really does so much for us already that I don't like the idea that he has to possibly do Start and Finish Controls when other members don't want to volunteer for it. To put it bluntly, Rob has better things to do and shouldn't he get to enjoy his weekends or do a rando ride too every now and then like the rest of us?Â
Â
I was pleasantly surprised during my first DPC in 2019 when my friend Dan Pannell was volunteering for the first control at Jimmy One Stop! I didn't know he was volunteering, but seeing a familiar face was awesome! I also rolled into that control with a flat and kind of mentally out of it (as I had foolishly done a 300k the weekend before and a 200k the weekend before that so I was already pushing all my limits) so Dan graciously changed my flat for me! One of the most fun times I had volunteering in person was actually the January 2024 pop picnic with my friend Ioannis. Making the 2 gallons of (vegan) soup I made only took 90 minutes the night before and then it was like just hanging out with Ioannis for 4 hours the next day in Crissy Field! We got to meet and talk with other riders coming in, in particular those who we don't ride brevets with and/or only do populaires so we never met them before.Â
Â
Randonneuring is a very social (yet silly in so many ways) sport and volunteering has been a great way to meet other riders in a different capacity than just on the road, especially meeting people of different speeds than you who you would otherwise not necessarily meet! After all, if all else fails, talk about bikes with them!
Â
6. Brevet results
Â
Here are the results of the last SFR brevet Mt. Hamilton 200k. Names highlighted in Yellow are riders that completed their very first brevet! Congratulations to all, and Welcome, Welcome, Welcome to all our new riders:
