The mission blue butterfly (Icaricia icariodes missionensis) is a unique subspecies of Boiduval's blue butterfly that was first discovered in San Francisco in 1937.

Endangered Species: Mission Blue Butterfly. This small butterfly spends its life near one plant - the lupine - which grows in wet, sandy, grassy areas around San Francisco, California.

About this event

Many rare plant and animal species live on Sign Hill’s native grasslands, including the endangered mission blue butterfly. Help us conserve and restore their habitat by installing native plants and removing invasive plants! Sign Hill Stewards will do important work while also learning more about the wildlife in their backyard.

When: Every other Friday and the 2nd Saturday of each month from 9am-12pm. Only cancelled for heavy rains.

Where: Unless otherwise specified by email volunteers will park at the Sign Hill Parking Lot nearby 964 Ridgeview Ct, South San Francisco, CA (Google Maps Link) and hike with staff to the restoration site.

Registration: Registration is required. Volunteers under the age of 18 must have a youth waiver signed by a parent/guardian. Youth under the age of 15 are welcome and must be accompanied by an adult.

What to bring: To prepare for working outdoors, please bring work gloves, plenty of water, sturdy shoes, long pants and sleeves, a hat/sunscreen, and a completed waiver for each volunteer. Volunteers should expect some hiking on steep terrain.
