You may not be able to use your burner, or the burner may not be recognized, if it is already being used by another burning application. You may need to disable the other burning application before you can use Roxio Easy Media Creator to burn a disc. Roxio Easy Media Creator needs blank unformatted discs. If you have a formatted disc in the drive, remove it and replace it with a blank, unformatted disc.

Note: Depending on the software version you are running, some of the applications described below may not be available. For information about upgrading to take full advantage of all the applications described, visit www.roxio.com.

If you are experiencing unusual behavior with Roxio Easy Media Creator, or display problems, make sure that you have the latest video drivers for your system installed. You can find updated video drivers on your system (or video card) manufacturer's Web site. It is recommended that you keep your video drivers up-to-date. Many display or other related application problems can be solved by having the latest video drivers installed.

Tracks purchased from online music stores may be protected and have different usage rights. For example, music tracks that you purchase online might only allow for audio CD creation; in this example, you could not browse for a purchased music track and add it to your Roxio projects.

Some drive emulation software may conflict with Roxio Easy Media Creator. If you have drive emulation software installed, you should disable it to use Roxio Easy Media Creator. For more information, visit the Roxio Support Web site. See Roxio support options.

Packet writing software provides an alternative to writing entire tracks or discs, but may cause problems when using Roxio Easy Media Creator. If you have problems formatting or writing to discs, uninstall any packet writing software and try again. For more information, visit the Roxio Support Web site. See Roxio support options.

Many of the supported audio and video formats (such as AVI, WMA, WMV, and WAV) support various types of compression and decompression. To play these formats, you need the correct codec installed on your system. For example, you might have an AVI file that uses codec ABC, and a WMV file that uses codec XYZ. If your system only has codec ABC installed, only the AVI file will play properly.

To get the required codec, play the file in another player on your system, such as Windows Media Player. Usually these players detect that the codec is missing and will automatically request that it be sent over the Internet and installed on your system.

When you double-click a Windows Media Video (WMV) file to preview it, the Preview window opens, but does not start to play the file automatically. This is intentional, to prevent the incorrect playback of WMV slideshows in this player window. To preview the file, click the Play button in the Preview window.

Many burning problems can be resolved by updating the firmware of your CD or DVD recorder. (Please check the drive manufacturer's Web site to see if a firmware update is available.) Other issues may be resolved by using another brand of blank media.

To provide you with current information about the individual component applications of Easy Media Creator, we have posted application-specific ReadMe documents on the Roxio Web site. The links to the application-specific ReadMe documents containing the latest known issues are below. Internet access is required to access these following ReadMe documents.

Note: Depending on the software version you are running, some of the applications listed below may not be available. For information about upgrading to take full advantage of all the applications listed, visit www.roxio.com.

Within that little lot, you're bound to find one or two applications that should suit your multimedia needs and presumably if you're looking at a suite, more than one. On a purely fiscal note, if each application were of equal worth to you, you'd be looking at AU$7.22 per application, which is pretty cheap in our books.

Installation of Roxio Easy Media Creator 10 was fundamentally simple, but even on a high-end PC, remarkably slow. Don't look to install Roxio Easy Media Creator 10 if you need some encoding done quickly; instead we'd suggest a short walk in a nearby park. The sunlight (in moderation) will do you good.

Like most suites, Roxio Easy Media Creator 10 comes with a central command console -- labeled just as the Roxio Easy Media Creator 10 Suite -- which gives you access to all the applications and utilities, as well as a simplified, task-driven interface based around either media types or frequently used tasks. It's also entirely possible to launch each application by itself if the guided Suite approach doesn't suit your needs.

With so many different sub-applications, it's a tough call to give an overall assessment, especially given the wide range of applications on offer. No doubt the basics -- especially video editing -- will appeal most to many purchasers, and in the wide pantheon of consumer video applications, Roxio Easy Media Creator 10 stacks up well, with plenty of easy to use predefined templates and a nice wizard-driven interface for timid users.

As with most Windows consumer video editing software, we also encountered the odd bit of instability with the Roxio Easy Media Creator 10 package. Sometimes this was just a program component that would flash up a splash screen, only to vanish forevermore. More annoyingly, we did attempt to render a few files to DVD, only to have the package lock up mid-encode, after more than an hour's rendering time. As always with Windows -- and seemingly even more so with Windows Vista -- it's tough to say if this was an application or an operating system problem, as it took the system down with it. At the end of the day, though, our encoding didn't work and we'd wasted some time.

There are also some pitfalls present in having so many programs available; until you're aware of the differences between, say CineMagic and VideoWave, you might pick an application that either lacks the features you're looking for, or is pitched either at novices or experts, leaving you annoyed or in the dark respectively. It's also worth noting that Roxio Easy Media Creator 10's Blu-Ray/HD-DVD support only extends to data backup; it can neither play back nor create high definition video discs for external playback. We were also rather annoyed that for something that pitches itself as a "suite", there's often not much interplay between individual applications.

Besides being able to capture audio, Roxio Easy Media Creator 8 provides powerful audio-editing capabilities and several interfaces in which to edit audio. LP and Tape Assistant and Quick Sound Editor are abbreviated versions of Sound Editor, Easy Media Creator's full-fledged audio-editing application.

LP and Tape Assistant is a capture, edit, and export wizard that allows you to quickly process the audio you want to capture. The wizard gives you the option to export your audio to Sound Editor if you need more editing capabilities.

Quick Sound Editor can be launched from most of the audio project interfaces within Easy Media Creator. It has the fewest audio-editing capabilities, but is good for a quick clean up. Although it is not addressed individually within this chapter, all of its capabilities are found within Sound Editor.

LP and Tape Assistant is a complete capture, edit, and exporting wizard. It's useful if you would like to immediately edit the audio you have captured and then export it to whatever application or format you choose. If you are not familiar with the steps to capture audio in the assistant, refer to Capture Audio Using LP and Tape Assistant.

Here's your chance to really play with the tracks you've imported. Above your tracks is a header that labels each track you've recorded; in this case, 1 Recorded Audio, 2 Recorded Audio, and so forth. A line separates each track you've recorded. By holding your left mouse button and dragging those lines around, you can change the definition of the track boundaries. You can merge two or more tracks (or parts of tracks) or create a new clip entirely.

You can select any one of these tracks by highlighting the header. Or, by clicking anywhere inside the tracks, you can create a new selection line. You can leave it as a line in order to create a separator, or you can drag it to your preferred end point to highlight a larger selection. At any time you can preview your recorded audio by clicking the Play button at the bottom left of the screen to make sure you've selected the portion of the audio clip you want.
