THE 9TH JYVÄSKYLÄ SUMMER SCHOOL, FINLAND,
AUGUST 2-20, 1999

The Jyväskylä Summer School offers courses in various
fields of science for advanced undergraduate students,
graduate students and post-docs, with an aim towards
encouraging interdisciplinary study. The programme of the
Summer School consists of courses in the following areas:

- Biology
- Chemistry
- Computer science and information systems
- Mathematics and applied mathematics
- Physics
- Statistical sciences

The official language of the School is English. The new
name "Jyväskylä Summer School" has been adopted since
1.1.1999. The School is included in the official teaching
programmes of several national Graduate Schools: Particle
and Nuclear Physics, Condensed Matter, Bioorganic Chemistry,
Analysis and Logic, Computing and Mathematical Sciences (COMAS),
and Computational Chemistry and Molecular Spectroscopy (LASKEMO).
The School also enjoys national status as an educational Centre
of Excellence, and was acknowledged at the European level by
receiving support from the EU-TMR programme in 1997-1998.
The 8th Jyväskylä Summer School in August 1998 was attended by
204 participants and 60 teachers from 31 different countries.
Altogether 1645 participants and 293 teachers have attended the
Summer School since its inception in 1991.

Application

To apply for the Jyväskylä Summer School the attached
application form should be filled in and sent, together with
the applicant’s study record or CV, to the organisers by
May 30th, 1999. A limited number of grants will be available
for students from Russia and the Baltic and Eastern Central
European countries, to cover some of their travel (economy class)
and accommodation costs. To apply for this support the applicant
should send a letter of recommendation from his/her supervisor
along with an informal application letter indicating costs.
Additional financing is available for participants of the
statistical science workshop (ST1) coming from the developing
and transition countries. The application form and further
details are available on the homepage of the workshop
(http://www.stat.jyu.fi/wshop99jy).

Accommodation and Fees

The courses are free of charge. Participants can choose
their accommodation between modern student apartments,
summer hotels and hotels. The approximate cost for
housing is as follows: student apartment 1050 FIM/three
weeks, 750 FIM/two weeks, 450 FIM/week, summer hotel
200 FIM/night (2-6 beds/room) and hotel 500 FIM/night
(1ECU=6FIM). Each participant is responsible for his/her
own housing, living and travel expenses. The rent of the
student apartment has to be paid in advance before 30th of
June 1999. Full refund (excluding money transfer expenses)
can be made if cancellation is received by that date.

The University and the City of Jyväskylä

The University of Jyväskylä is a dynamic educational and
research institution with six faculties and 12 000 students,
located in the City of Jyväskylä about 300 km north from
Helsinki. Connections from Helsinki are frequent by air,
rail and bus. The economy of the Jyväskylä region, with a
population of 110 000, is based on modern pulp and paper
industries and the emerging information technologies. The
city is also well known for its sports activities and sites
in, e.g., rally, ski-jumping, aerobics and gymnastics (in all
of which it has fostered recent world champions), together
with its national research facilities for both competitive
sport and health programmes. Jyväskylä is surrounded by
beautiful lakes, ridges, fields and forests. Numerous
recreational activities can be experienced, including swimming,
golf, hiking, berry and mushroom picking, fishing, canoeing,
and lake cruises. The local organisers of the School will
offer an inspiring atmosphere and various types of leisure
activities, which will put the participants in touch with
aspects of the Finnish culture, including enjoyment of the
Finnish sauna.

Further information and addresses

Final information on the Summer School will be sent to
accepted students latest in June 1999. Updated information
