Nokia and Mobira are brands that are on sale everywhere. These are
the recent cell phones, if you are looking for some 'warez' for
them, too bad. Try again...:-)
However, Nokia/Mobira radios have been sold longer than there were
any cellular networks, just like Motorola. And when the first NMT
cellular networks emerged in the Nordic countries in 1981, there
was a Mobira phone available. And, as you can confirm from many
public sources, this is the way it has been ever since.
Most phones, starting from that era until the early 90's, have two
attractive features when compared to the phones of today. They used
a common single-chip CPU like RCA1802/1806, Hitachi HD6303 or Moto
68HC11, and the program was stored on a common DIL EPROM.
The standards we are talking about are NMT450 and NMT900. There
is also some plain-vanilla and trunked 80/150/450 MHz equipment.
Most of them are Nokia/Mobira, there are also some other Finnish
brands like Benefon and Televa, and some Nokia PMR equipment is
actually OEM stuff from companies like Kyodo and Philips. We also
have links to some pages with conversion info for other European
brands.
Well, we took a couple of these beasts, gave them the only treat-
ment we know of, and you'll see the rest on our pages:
http://oh3tr.ele.tut.fi/english/modifications.html
The NMT phones have been used in all Nordic countries, Holland,
Switzerland, Poland, the Czech Republic, Thailand, Malaysia and
in many other countries. The trunked PMR phones have been exported
to many European countries like Germany, Holland, Spain and the UK.
You can even find them in the Azores or even in Sierra Leone.
The language of the pages has been chosen so that it is understood
all over the world. This means bad English. The pages appear also in
French, Italian and Spanish. If you think you can help in translating
them to e.g. German or to some of the Scandinavian languages, please
do not hesitate to contact us.
We are also looking for people who would like to write software and
make modification notes for the early Nokia AMPS phones. There is a
possibility to supply a limited quantity of Nokia manuals to reliable
third parties, they say ;-)
Remember to relax on the holidays...Wally, this means your retirement,
too...:-)
