Next thing I know, I am hearing about a new form of home network,
backed by some of the top names in the computer industry, that allows
1 Megabit per second networking using your present telephone wiring.
The new technology is supposed to run 1 Mbs Ethernet over phone lines
already installed in your house without interfering with phone, fax or
even ASDL. It is reportedly going to be available by third quarter of
this year, with 10 Mbs Ethernet over the same lines due by the second
half of 1999.
The Home Phonline Networking Alliance (HomePNA) is promising all of
this, open standards, and testing labs, and is backed by such
heavyweights as AT&T, Compaq, Hewlett-Packard, IBM, and Intel.
Of course, we all know what promises mean in this industry. But the
future is looking better and better.

I remember reading a Dvorak article on this stuff recently, and
he seemed concerned about security. I can easily imagine the gov
deciding that they don't need a warrant to tap this stuff, much like
they claim (and the #$%^& courts have backed them up!) that they don't
need a warrant to listen in on cordless phones. . . (because, of
course, people who use one understand themselves to be engaging in
short-wave radio and not a telephone conversation.<snort>).
