Well it seems we're going to be lacking any sort of freebies. No Ubuntu cd's. We normally just ask around for the other distros. So if we weren't to do cd's (let's face it, handing out bits of plastic which quite likely aren't going to be used isn't the most environmentally friendly thing to do), is there something else we could do instead?

Despite the environmental issues, :) I'll have a few hundred
openSUSE 11.4 DVDs and a few Mageia 1 cds as well.

Cheers

100 Ubuntu cd's to the mix... Really do wish we could find a better
alternative...

1/2GB and even 4GB USB sticks can be had from alibaba/dealextreme etc
on bulk for less than $1 a pop.

Just sayin.

Interesting.... Do you have a link to any of these? I'd be interested
to see what quantities are needed...

Normally minimum of 100 for most stuff on Alibaba.

Yeah, but you won't get the $1 price in 100's. Probably looking at
around US$5 per stick, plus shipping, plus GST.

I've got some Fedora 15 DVDs and I can probably get the Red Hat guys
in OZ to send over some CDs as well. Just need an idea of numbers.

How many people usually turn up at this event?

Hi Steve,

We had a pretty good turn-out last year (if I were to guess maybe 50?),
but most are casual users & in many cases they're already FLOSS enthusiasts.
Maybe 20 disks may be enough? If people want more, we can burn them off
from ISO's?
Having a cache of 1, 2 or 4GB USB sticks may also be handy to build
live-disks from? I think this may be a more valuable use of resources.

I have a fairly up-to-date store of ISO's we can use; what we don't have
we can download the day (?)

Any word on potential sponsors? I (Workshop Enterprises) can sponsor a
few rives if anyone can send me a link.
I put in a plug at the end of the NZOSS AGM re getting a bit more love
shared between the respective SFD chapter/events around NZ.
Wellington is extremely well-organized & I think we (Auckland) can
probably learn a thing or 2 from them.

Whoa! Account for growth... We're aiming to get 150 through this year. With the education emphasis and more aggressive marketing (which given previous years efforts has been next to none) I think we should get it.

Always better getting more than too little. If you have cd's left over you can always send them off to other events (Graham Lauder normally goes off to another event the following day) which can only really benefit you. If people are having to wait around for them, you've failed.

More important than sticks (given that we've got cd's coming through I don't see them as necessary) is kids prizes. With an education bent we really need to be finding ways of engaging with kids. So being able to offer up prizes such as tux soft toys and the like for competitions or whatever would be a huge plus.

Might be worth approaching a couple of corporates like ICONZ who were at the recent CIO summit and had a variety of branded USB devices. The ICONZ ones were like mini credit cards with pop out USB sticks.

I passed the details for the ICONZ Marketing person responsible for those USB sticks through to Jaco so they can talk turkey. No promises.
BTW you realise i've less than 2 weeks left at ICONZ, right? ;-)

Sorted; awaiting reply, so will let you know as soon as I know more.

Just a quick query:
* any idea what sort of numbers to expect (& demographic)?
* by virtue of the possible donation of the USB's, does that count as a
sponsor who can get their logo on the site & all, or are there other
criteria?
* what do I (in the capacity of my business or TB) have to bring to the
game to qualify as a sponsor, etc?

Can I suggest that any org donating freebies should be eligible to be called a Sponsor, and 'tiers' (which determine the level of perks / sizes of logos) need to be defined.

I'd think if ICONZ pony up with say, up to $500 worth of goods and services in the form of a bunch of branded stuff, that it's worth something - so long as that branded stuff is not purely advertising/marketing swag.  USB sticks would seem to me to be worth some $$ and worth some recognition in return, if nothing else you're more likely to get buy-in from corporates if they can show some tangible return on their investment.

I think that's a more-than-reasonable arrangement

There aren't really any rules, so we make it up as we go along.  There are official sponsors internationally who contribute to the pack we requested and hope will arrive soon - http://softwarefreedomday.org/en/sponsors-and-supporters
The pack has (from memory) a few t-shirts and some transfers for more shirts, a banner, some CDs (I think some masters that we can copy locally if we want to hand them out), some stickers and balloons.
