About the N&N Land Justice Project

Together with religious communities and movement partners, the Nuns & Nones Land Justice Project creates land transitions rooted in ecological and racial healing.

As they downsize in number, religious communities are making long-term decisions about the land they've stewarded for generations. After years of cultivating relationships between older Catholic sisters and younger activists and organizers across the country, the Nuns & Nones Land Justice Project is working to center land justice in that planning and transition process.

We define land justice as the practice of centering ecological, social, and racial justice in decisions about how land is used, loved and governed by people. In our context of land transition, this means protecting land from extraction, regenerating its wellbeing and resilience, and expanding equity and governance to communities who have been dispossessed of land, especially Black and Indigenous stewards. We do this through ongoing education and organizing of our base, offering tailored support and technical assistance, forging new partnerships across movements, and telling a new story about what's possible.

In our first year, we've educated over 100 religious communities about land justice pathways for property planning and will continue through our upcoming Fall Learning Series; we've published a suite of resources on Landback, Reparations, and Regenerating the Commons; and we are directly accompanying and supporting a set of regional focus communities in the journey of land justice. We are grateful to be working with incredible partners and leaders in the climate justice movement, such as the New Economy Coalition, Movement Generation, NDN Collective, the Sustainable Economies Law Center, Agrarian Trust, and the Center for Ethical Land Transition.

It's beautiful work, it's growing, and we look forward to connecting with aligned and kindred folks to support new stories on sacred lands (all land is sacred!). If you would be willing to share with your networks or personal contacts, we'd be so grateful.
