Housing is everything.
Housing is simultaneously the foundation of our lives, the most expensive thing in our monthly budgets, and an essential part of having a healthy, stable life.
We know housing is the fundamental building block to thriving individuals, families, businesses, and communities. But there aren’t enough homes in places like San Francisco where there are plenty of other opportunities, like high-paying jobs and top-performing schools.
Good thing YIMBYs know the best way to make change: by showing up.
When we show up, we win.
Just last week, we brought over a dozen advocates together from across the state to testify in Sacramento in favor of Senator Scott Wiener’s SB 79. The bill could unlock tens of thousands of new homes near transit, but there was a real chance it wouldn’t pass the Housing Committee.
The halls of the Capitol were packed with advocates, security was tight, the meeting room was at capacity, so several of us were in the hall. We were at the Capitol for over 7 hours of back-and-forth discussion, debate, and testimony before the bill finally passed.
While there is more to do to make sure SB 79 becomes law, getting it past this hurdle is a huge win. And it only happened because we showed up.
It’s time to show up again, YIMBYs.
The YIMBY Party we host every year is a celebration of what we’ve accomplished because of how we’ve shown up in the past. It’s also a recommitment to the movement. It’s about reaffirming that we’re here for the fight. That we’re determined to win. That we’ll keep showing up until everyone has access to a stable, affordable home that meets their needs.
So come celebrate with us. Celebrate that we got SB 79 through its first hurdle. Celebrate that San Francisco is on the cusp of passing a rezoning that will jumpstart the city’s housing supply. Celebrate that San Jose and Berkeley are taking massive strides toward housing abundance.
And celebrate that we’re here to win. We’re here and we’ll stay here until the job is done. Until housing is no longer a barrier to success. Until housing is truly abundant and affordable.
