Just to make it clear the Can Jam at RMAF is being relegated to a tent in the parking lot. I for one am not real excited about that idea.

Maybe we should be excited about CanJam in a tent.  That big room is awful, very distracting.  Makes it hard to hear clearly.  If they set up a bunch of small tents, that might actually be an improvement.  Even a big tent could be better.

Also, a smaller RMAF would hardly be a bad thing.  Big names from the atrium not appearing?  God forbid that we be prevented from hearing  Wilson Audio speakers (or Focal or whatever) with Accuphase monoblocks that require a separate power grid.  What would Stereophile have to write about?

Yeah, this does not look good this year. Don't forget the Marriott"s high quality elevators when crowds are concentrated!

Lol, good point Chris, and Maybe they'll move the big names from the mezzanine out to tents next year!

Although I shouldn't complain, I finally learned to just not go up there and get a headache year after year...

And, maybe, having canjam physically separate, will help separate it mentally?
Like from expectations?
Every time i try to listen to headphones after listening to hi-fi,
I just notice what's missing, and how "weird" it sounds,
rather than being able to relax and enjoy it.

I agree. Can Jam in a tent has the potential to really suck if there is noise outside the tent. I'll bet the vendor are very not happy. Death of RMAF?

Sadly there's going to be car noise wind and the weather is typically unpredictable it can either be raining or just cool and partly cloudy. Regardless not a promising environment for the can jam it's a shame they didn't have time to move it to the Hyatt right nearby. I'm considering not going because I am more into the Can Jam at the moment than the two channel systems, I'm happy with my 2-channel system and the headphone experience is more fun at the moment. I am admittedly not a headphone guy.  I like to hear music fill a room.  The soundstage never sounds right to me on headphones.  It's cool to hear the detail of headphones, but there is something disorienting about it.  And you have to sit there with these things clamped to your head.

With that said, I remember when CanJam first joined RMAF, and thinking of how alien and interesting it was -- really foreign to me.  For whatever reason, headphones are the largest growing demographic in the hi-fi industry, and it seems to be driven by younger people.  I envision it as a gateway into the rest of audiophilia.  It's not especially my cup of tea, but it's a cool cup just the same.

For those who worry about the "death of RMAF/CanJam", I wouldn't worry about it.  Slow elevators?  Sure.  Is that somehow new for the Marriott?  Noise in the big CanJam tent?  Does anyone seriously think it will be louder out there than in that big room?  That room is awful.  But it's still worth checking it out.  I may go this year.

I agree Chris, all the above.
Headphones sound "weird" to me too, like the sound is coming from inside my head, not in front of me, no image, no soundstage, can't place instruments, just sounds fake.  Can't feel it in my chest, not visceral.
But like you said, they may be the "gateway drug" for the next generation.
I'll keep going to RMAF to catch up with friends I've made there, enjoy some great music, complain about what I don't like or understand, learn new things...
Looking forward to it.
With or without things clamped on my head with wires "leashing" me to a chair.
Always been worth the trip, and always found a cup or two of tasty tea.  :)

If that's how you feel about headphones, you may not have heard good headphones with T a good rig.

Maybe not.
I've heard quite a few expensive headphone rigs, but that doesn't mean they're good.
I heard audeze, etc @ RMAF a couple years ago.  That's the only name I remember from that room.
And spent some time with the pair Sid Smith used to voice the Marantz 7, with Dave Slagles all nickel 50 amps & an awesome vinyl rig.

May be worth checking out the tent.
Headphones sure would save space & $$&!

The best stuff will be in rooms, not can jam.  Spend time in the Stax room. Find out if anyone will have the new focal utopia ($4,000), which have been reviewed as fantastic. JPS labs usually has a room with outstanding headphone setups. Schiit will have a room too, so stop by there too.

will a great headphone rig rival a great speaker rig in a well treated room? Probably not. Will it sounds awesome for a ton less money and not be loud to the rest of the house? Yes.

Certainly listen to sennheiser HD800s, hifiman he1000, focal utopia, and MrSpeaker ether flow.

Allan,

Do you have any earbud/IEM recommendations?  I'm just looking for something to use at the gym.  The problem I keep experiencing with earbuds is that I can't get a good seal in the ear, so the bass is anemic and the treble is really pronounced.  I've read lots of positive reviews of different earbuds and IEMs, but I always wonder if they'll fit.

Chris

Try different tips. That is the key (and good insertion). I use comply foam tips, but nothing wrong with silicon tips. You may need to try larger or different shaped tips.

I like Allan use the comply tips.  They give a very good seal for me where the silicone ones fail. The only good fit silicone tips I've used were on etymotic in-ear-canal buds.

That said, I too much prefer a good set of speakers to headphones at home. The immersion and imaging feel more natural to me.    Sure, there are better headset amps then what I am using, but the HE400 + JDS Labs c421 should be sufficient.  To each our own.

After spending over a year heavily focused on the Headphone scene I have been voraciously rolling, listening and reading/watching HeadFi (http://www.head-fi.org/) , InnerFidelity You Tube, Headphone.Guru, Headfonics etc.

If you want big soundstage, in my listening experience, you are best off trying Open headphones such as the Sennheisser HD 800, 800'S, AKG 812, 712, Massdrop AKG K7XX  some Stax  and the Beyerdynamic DT 990.
Semi/Closed headphones, Fostex TH900, TH600, TH610, TH-XX00 Massdrop throw a good soundstage for a semi/closed as well.
This is a good place to start listening for a larger soundstage in various flavors.

Remember, your box loudspeakers are belching and burping resonant frequencies  as well as the room nulls all over the place that  are in play with your room. Headphones on the other hand reduce these anomaly's dramatically with direct proximity, no box and no room, in simple terms a direct path, IEM's being the most direct of course. So which is more correct and which is more enjoyable? I personally have come to respect and love both! Just my two cents in the matter.

Sure, speakers are definitely better, except when one has limited funds, no good place for speakers, or needs quiet personal audio.

Based on the advice here (thanks!), I ended up getting the Comply sx-500 foam earbud tips.  They do make a significant difference.  I'm using them with a cheap pair of Hifiman earbuds, which have gone from sounding thin and shrill to being much fuller, with more pronounced bass and mids.   Still not "audiophile" by any stretch, but genuinely listenable, and functional for the gym.

For a while I was using some inexpensive bluetooth earbuds, but I went through two pairs pretty quickly.  One pair stopped working once I changed cell phones (the new phone wouldn't recognize it), and another pair stopped charging after about a month of use.  Bluetooth is a neat idea, but not really worth the bother, imho.  Evidently Apple disagrees.

Glad to hear it worked out for you!  I use the comply on Jaybird X2 for gym and lab use. Not perfect by any means, but they do a pretty good job for what they are. I've had them for about 20 months and they keep plugging away just fine.
Enjoy your "new" bud experience.
