Well,
At mine and Tony's recent Halloween Birthday Bash I was pleasantly surprised by the appearance of Tony's headphone amplifier's. An electrostatic amplifier for Stax headphones and a Solid State amp in photo attachment.
Both sounding excellent but to these ears the Landry SS amplifier was beyond words to describe it's perfection.
I have heard many solid state headphone amplifiers in my day and many hi-end amps at that including RMAF and Head-Fi events so these ears are not newbie when it comes to State Of The Art. With that said I would have to say this may well be the finest headphone amp I think I have ever heard! Dis-claimer, yes Tony is my friend and no I do not get any freebies touting his work.
Sound: One thing that keeps coming to my mind is speed, this amp is incredibly fast, in fact it is pretty damn close to electrostat speeds. Secondly, the timbrel and textural quality is astounding especially after listening to Christian Thielemann's Brahms 3rd symphony with Dresden on a Deutsche Grammophon recording in quad DSD, wow! Another thing that had me gripped with astonishment was the smooth detailed transparency this amp was capable of, sounding like a cross between a tube and hybrid amp. It had the texture and relaxed expansive soundstage right like tubes and the speed, authority and tautness of a hybrid. Robust would be another adjective I would have to add here with control of the bass region that was deeply satisfying and exciting.This amp is a real gem and I highly suggest you give it a listen should the chance ever arise. It is elegant, smooth, very detailed and fast with parts you only find in the extreme Hi-End amplifiers of this world. This amp is truly a gem and I hope Tony gets the well deserved attention he deserves!
