I posted an article by Ethan Siegel last week arguing just the opposite. He does mention in the end of this article why he is his own counterpoint.

 When we encounter a large group of objects with a continuum of properties (which we use to define these objects) and the first are significantly different from the last, we want to form categories. The lines may be somewhat arbitrary, and in light of new discoveries, these lines may need to change.
