Could lithium stave off Alzheimer’s disease?
"In studies of adult mice genetically engineered to develop plaques and Alzheimer’s-like symptoms, adding a low dose of a compound called lithium orotate to their drinking water throughout their lives prevented the development of plaques, along with the accumulation of tau, another Alzheimer’s-linked protein. Unlike lithium carbonate, the molecule used to treat bipolar disorder, a low dose of lithium orotate completely reversed memory loss in aging mice during object recognition and maze tasks—without evidence of the long-term kidney and thyroid toxicity known to be a side effect of the bipolar treatment . . ."
