In the most recent issue of American Antiquity (76(1):24-40), Douglas Bamforth has published an article (Original Stories, Archaeological Evidence, and Post-Clovis Paleoindian Bison Hunting on the Great Plains) in which he argues that the archaeological evidence on the Great Plains supports Native continuity between the Paleoindian period (pre-10,900 cal. BC) and the post-Paleoindian period (after 10,900). This is good news, as many of us remember that arguments have been put forth (Kennewick, etc.) that there was no continuity during this period, especially for the Plains, Great Basin, and Plateau. Although Bamforth’s article pertains only to the Great Plains, it is encouraging to see a reversal in how archaeology conceptualizes Native American ancestry into the deep past.
Cheers,
Peter
