In the market for a power meter, but not feeling in the market enough for $1k+ pedals.

LBS recommended I look into the 4iiii left side setup, and I found robust discussions about this and similar options in a 2019 SF2G thread.

Unfortunately/typically, there's a twist:  My Ultegra FC-R8000 172.5 cranks are sold out @ 4iiii, and I don't want to lose the bike 3+ weeks for a factory install.

So I have a couple of options:

(1) Stages sells the correct part and appears to be in stock.  Early reports seemed to favor 4iiii over Stages - does anyone have more recent experience with either brand?

(2) 4iiii support said it was also possible to move up (Dura-Ace FC-R9200) or down (105 FC-R7000) and it would be compatible. Other than aesthetics and possibly a few grams, are there any real downsides to this?

Thanks,
Andy

i do have the stages power meter crank set installed and it works fine
in conjunction with my garmin.
but i have it as a super expensive hack. i actually had the original
ultegra 11 speed shimano crankset that has since been recalled fail on
me spectacularly and i could literally get nothing to replace it at
the time besides the stages cause it was the peak of the covid
shortages.
i am not really the power meter target audience though and would sell
it for cheap but its not the size you are looking for.

Thanks for spotting that!  I think they may have recently refreshed stock because this wasn't available before.

Going back to my OP question - will there be any meaningful issue running an 8100 left crank arm on an otherwise 8000 system?

This article says it's fine, but I take it with a grain of salt as it's coming from a dealer who wants me to buy it:

Going even earlier in your question, if you don't want to drop $1000 on pedals, Favero Assioma pedals generally go on sale once a year at black friday. Last year the duals were marked down from 759 to 559. I've had mine for 2 years and am very happy with them.

No problem at all. Same bottom bracket.

That’s a pretty smokin’ deal.

I’ve been super happy with my Stages Ultegra FC-6800 left-side meter. In my case, it’s mated to a FC-7950 because I’m a luddite, but I’ve also swapped it onto FC-6600 and FC-CX70 cranks for specific events (El Tour de Tucson and Tainthammer, respectively).

Mine is obviously an older model, and I did have one warranty return with Stages (an issue with the battery door — they replaced the entire unit), but it’s been a solid performer ever since, and has logged many thousands of miles.

If it were me, I’d step down to the FC-R7000 rather than shredding a few extra bills on the FC-R9200.

That should be fine. The spindle mating interface is the same. I’m kind of amazed that Shimano hasn’t screwed this up yet, TBH :-)

I have Assioma Uno (single sided) power meter.  I wouldnt go back to no power after having and using a power meter.  I believe its sub $400 now for me that $80/year

1) after having a power meter, the benefits for improving fitness, if you use the data, are very good
2) it helps you not be lazy (low power) and helps you not blow up (to much power)
3) you can move it between bikes
4) there have been zero issues with the pedal functioning since 2018 and it probably has 15-20k miles on it.

+1 on Favero Assoima. Being able to easily move between bikes is great. I have Duo-Shi and I hardly use the dual side measurement. These have a slight increase in Q-factor (stance width) so keep that in mind if you have super specific fitting requirements. I have no fit issues with these.

Another benefit (at least currently) is that replacement parts are readily available:

Side note, if you buy a “replacement pedal” it’s cheaper than the single sided option. Maybe that’s a hidden deal?

Favero's sale is live -- under $500 if you already have recent Shimano pedals to use (but it's a larger Q-factor increase than buying their full Look-compat pedals)

FYI — Stages has the 105-series FC-R7000 left arm power meter on sale right now for < $300.

just fyi/fwiw, there is import duty on the Favero Assioma pedals of 8%, plus FedEx's Disbursement Fee of about 1.1%, e.g., that nets out to about $50 additional for each Duo set.
