Hi all,

My wife and I are moving into a new apartment soon where we'll likely have to keep our 4 bikes in the spare bedroom. (No garage and the backyard is only accessible through the apartment.)

Wondering if anyone has ideas / experience on what product or strategy works well for indoor bike storage? So far we're either considering either:

Or 4 of these "Bike Nook" racks, which have the benefit of being easily moveable and not requiring major drilling into the wall: https://getbikenook.com/

Many thanks in advance for any ideas!

Brian

Hmmm--I hadn't seen these options! The Wayfair one looks like it'd work just fine, as long as you don't mind lifting the bikes. (The Bike Nooks are interesting, but I do wonder how stable they are...I can imagine banging into one and the whole thing toppling over.)

I researched a bunch of racks a while back for our (Wirecutter's) guide to indoor bike storage. I quite liked the Delta Michelangelo, as did a bunch of SF2Gers, though it does take up more wall space than the Wayfair one would. You don't really have to drill into the wall, although the instructions do say you should. (Maybe if you have small kids who might be tugging on it?) I had one in my living room for years, and never bothered to attach it.

Now I'm gonna order a Bike Nook and give it a try...

for absolute utility and flexibility of configuration it's hard to beat the Rubbermaid Fasttrack system. not gonna win you any interior design awards - probably better suited for a garage aesthetically - but super strong, super easy to move wheel hooks around, and can take other non-bike accessories like broom hooks (helmet holders, in my garage) etc. if you install two rails in parallel you can achieve maximum bike density by staggering the handlebars. you will have to drill several holes in the wall, however, so get a good studfinder.

forgive the chaotic state of the garage in this photo, but you can see I'm hanging a tandem, a heavy mountain bike, and a bunch of others.

For display in our home, we use https://cycloc.com/ps/

Something like https://www.cb2.com/wood-bike-storage/s503046 would fit in better with traditional decor

i used the rubbermaid fasttrack system in an old apartment.
yeah not going to win you design awards but it worked really well.

currently using a different manufacturer's take on the cb2 wood thing.

my personal two cents, is that i prefer things drilled into walls into
studs and not easily moveable.
the memory of my experience being in a major earthquake is still quite
strong 30 years later.

Thank you for all these ideas!

I think for space reasons we'll need one of the ones where the bikes mount vertically / perpendicular to the wall, so currently intrigued by this one from the Wirecutter article: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B004N9BUEY/?tag=thewire06-20&linkCode=xm2&ascsubtag=AwEAAAAAAAAAAOxE&th=1

If anyone wants one of the CB2 wooden racks, we have a spare (don't ask)!

If you don't want to drill into the walls, I recommend the Minoura hanging rack  Minoura Freestanding Bike Rack | Wayfair. I used it in a previous apartment that had no garage or basement storage.

+1 to the rubbermaid tracker. I installed it in my parents' garage a while back on recommendation from this group.
