Hey everyone, looking for suggestions for the best route between Woodside and Google (MTV).  Obviously there could be a trade off between speed and safety - ideally it would balance the two.

This morning I did SF2G-Skyline and used Sandhill Road -> Junipero Serra -> Arastradero -> Charleston but didn't really like the traffic and the disappearing bike lane on Charleston.

Is there a better way that doesn't sacrifice too much speed?

Taking portola valley + alpine + arastradero instead of sand hill bypasses the worst of the traffic in the area. Then from arastradero you can turn right on old middlefield way and there is a bike path over the highway which might be useful for you. See the end of this ride for the portola valley detour to arastradero and the very end of this ride http://app.strava.com/activities/153087401 for the bike path.

If the disappearing bike lane on Charleston you are referring to is just before crossing 101, you can take Leghorn instead. Although Leghorn doesn't have a bike lane, it does have much less traffic than Charleston.

You can also turn left at Fabian way just before the intersection with San Antonio, and just after the road starts aligning with Bayshore there's a tunnel under the 101 - entrance to it is via a path on your left side. Then you're on Bayshore, which you can take the rest of the way to Google.

The tunnel might be closed seasonally, but it's not like we'll ever have enough rain to close the tunnel ever again.

Thanks everyone - I'll try some variations.

Alexandre@ I think I know the Alpine route you are talking about, but the Strava link used the Sand Hill route.  If you do have an Alpine version, I'd be interested to see it - thanks!

the tunnel is gated off for the winter (or was a month or so ago). to get around it you'd have to pass your bike around the side (or be tiny enough to wedge yourself over the top).

Here's a track that shows the PV->Alpine route:

The tunnel is indeed closed right now. It's closed in the "winter" even though winter isn't really a thing any more.

This is my usual route when I go through Woodside: https://www.strava.com/activities/231885421. The little climb up the bottom of Page Mill is nice and the decent on Black Mountain is fun. It probably adds 10 minutes or so to the route (vs the already suggested left on Page and right back onto Arastradero). Also there's a bike path you can take for a half mile or so from the stop sign right after Arastradero crosses under 280. That part of Arastradero has fast cars and no bike lane, so the path is a good option.

The power of Cycle compels me to mention the roadie dirt variant:
          +
Arastradero dirt to Paseo Del Roble http://www.strava.com/segments/627885
          +
Moon+Saddle pathways to Elena http://www.strava.com/segments/609132

Put it all together: http://www.strava.com/activities/183854068. And if you want to go further out of your way to avoid riding with auto traffic, El Monte -> Covington/Levin -> Franklin Ave -> Stevens Creek Trail all the way to Google.
