I have a work offsite coming up in Moss Landing and am planning to ride down from Cupertino after work the evening before and camp on the beach.

This is the route I'm planning to take: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/30634026
Los Gatos Creek trail -> Old Santa Cruz Hwy -> Summit -> Eureka Canyon

I have heard that Old Santa Cruz Highway can be unpleasant in the evening as commuter traffic leaks onto it when 17 is congested. Wondering if anyone here has experience with riding those roads around rush hour and how bad they get, or suggestions for alternate routes which might be more pleasant to ride at that hour.

I drove the detour on Sunday in reverse Soquel SJ -> Summit -> Old Santa Cruz Hwy due to Google Maps routing around the backed up 17.

It looked like would be annoying to ride but no more than say a weekend Hwy1 climb to Muir Woods. Busy and narrow road but the cars aren't really flying uphill.

Not sure about the fog situation on Summit.

I think it’s supposed to be a shopping basket?

I have received a suggestion to go up Black Rd to Skyline and take that to Summit (detouring briefly on Old Summit after 17 to skip a narrow climb with fast traffic) in case Old SC Hwy is trafficy.

Everyone keeps saying how great Eureka Canyon is… I’m excited.

I see some looping at the end. Was that to increase miles? I recall a Spring Classic from years ago that also included Hazel Dell which was  a pretty great road. Here's that ride...it clearly adds miles for miles sake.

The loop is to get to the campsite (passing the main entrance to check in) before continuing to Moss Landing in the morning.

Eureka Canyon is great but don't expect a super smooth surface unless they've resurfaced in the last few years. It's greatness is its feeling of remoteness and low traffic.

Since Black Rd from 17 to Skyline backtracks a bit, you could connect through Sanborn County park for a scenic treat. 9 -> Sanborn Rd -> Lake Ranch trail (which starts out steep but is over quickly) -> the easy portion of John Nicholas trail that connects with Black Rd (https://www.strava.com/segments/8553400).
