I guess I moved into SF in 1998. Not particularly proud of it but I have lived in 10 places in that time frame. In 2003 after a run of bad roommates and way too many moves, I thought I had solved it by buying a house and then that didn't last either. Now it looks like I'm turning in my passport.

While I will be commuting down to the South Bay every Thursday, with some nominal SF2Gs and at least a weekly party car, it's going to be a big change.
Some things never change, I already have my first thing to bitch about up there.

So this will be my last ride call for a while probably. Make it a good one. And a different one.

24th/Mission BART, 6 AM, train departs 6:02 towards Pittsburg Bay/Point, get off at Orinda.

Moraga, Canyon, Pinehurst, Redwood, Castro Valley, Palo Verde, Palomares. Grit our teeth and get down Niles Canyon. Mowry/Peralta/Paseo Padre I think. Then the Dumbarton.

Sweet baby jeebus. Estimated arrival? I've taken the liberty of blocking my calendar until noon, just in case. Will be feeling slow due to recent temporary reduction in cycling activity.

This is more scenic than it is epic. Pinehurst is a pretty short climb. Redwood has some good heft to it as does Palomares, but they're no Tunitas, more like a Calaveras. Bret's track from Castro Valley to his office in FC was 2:20, which is probably similar to getting to NVDA or AAPL. Pretty certain we'll stay under 4 hours to NVDA.

Great riding, other than Niles Canyon. Moraga Road can be sketchy at times, but 6:30 AM is not one of those times. Once we leave Moraga we won't see many vehicles before we get to Castro Valley, and Palomares is pretty remote too.

If anyone wants coffee or treats, Martha's on 24th at 5:45 AM. 6 AM at 24th/Mission BART (train leaves at 6:02)
I'd prefer to get fed/caffeinated ahead of time, but there is a Starbucks in Orinda if there is an emergency.
We'll go at whatever pace, not a hammerfest but no dawdling, get to work pace for sure. Regroup at bottoms of descents.

Party car tomorrow for sure. I have 2 growlers from Firehouse to fill at Sunnyvale. Looks like I am taking Thurs/Fri off to prep the move, so this is it.

I will be pre-fed / caffeinated, but a pre-roll pee break is always welcome.

IIRC, I get 58 miles to Synopsys, which is 4 miles past Google, so 54 miles to Google.

Tempted to intercept BART downstream, but don't know which car you'll be in... westbound?

FUCK.

Temporary crown on front tooth that was installed on Monday just came off.  I have to be at the dentist at 0730 to get it re-attached.

Fantastic ride. Definitely worth the early roll-out. Best wishes up in Healdsburg, Murph. You'll be missed.

So frustrated that I missed this, but I couldn't get up that early today.

Is the route worth doing on a weekend, or would you do it differently for a
non-commute ride?

If conditions are similar to what we experienced, I'd definitely do it on a weekend. It's really scenic with some great climbs and fun descents. For non-commute days, I would probably skip the Dumbarton, ride down to San Jose, and take Caltrain back.

Murph, good luck up in Healdsburg and see you on Thursdays.

Carlin and Nathan - this is a pretty regular ride for me. Instead of descending Niles Canyon, we usually turn left on Niles Canyon, go through Sunol, head over to Calaveras Rd., then ride up to Fremont BART after descending Calaveras Wall. (Although I kind of like the idea of going downwind to San Jose and catching Caltrain.) You could also add Sierra Road if you were feeling ambitious.

It's around 70 miles.

I've heard the traffic on 84 is better on the weekends too. Not sure
how it was this morning, but I remember that stretch being the
dodgiest of the route from when I just did Palomares...

Yeah, great ride.  Definitely something we could do again, since it's no more time than a Half Moon Bay, really.

And Calaveras may be open now?  Not sure.  Also not sure how much time that would have added.

84 wasn't nearly as bad as I'd feared.  Going west there was a shoulder for about 80% of it.  Fast traffic next to you, but no worse than Skyline or the super sprint, really.

For the weekend, something like this (which would obviously be shorter if you cut off Wildcat and Three Bears by starting in Orinda):

The drivers on 84 were pretty civil. Palomares has a 25 MPH speed limit and I was going 36 when I got passed by a car going substantially faster.

Dan stopped before the intersection of 84 so we all ended up dead last on the palomares descent segment ;)

This is one of those times where it would be really great to say "I CAN'T FEEL MY LEGS!!!"... unfortunately, I can.

The wind was pretty squirrelly -- I caught a tail wind in a few spots, but it was mostly a cross wind or blowing in my face. Hence "105 minutes in Zone 4". Today also would have been a good day to eat something at the water stop. Alas, I did not, and had a minor bonk on Foothill riding into the wind.

There's a 0.3mph Strava tax on that complete ride ... my Garmin showed 20.0 when I got to my office.

I think it is time (actually well past assuming it was ever accurate) for you to update your description on Strava:

"I may not be very fast, but I sure have fun!"

And I'm not referring to the having fun part.
