Trying to figure out the best route through San Jose to get to the Caltrain station. Google Maps bike directions provides two suggestions:
  1. Left on Alum Rock; left on Scharff; right on E San Antonio; right on S 11th; left on E San Fernando St.
  2. Left on Quimby, left on Tully, right on Senter, Left on Story, right on S 11th; left on E San Fernando St.
Are either of those sufficiently nicer than just going straight down Alum Rock / E Santa Clara to be worth the extra navigation?

We just went down from alum Rock the last time. Ryan and I had to book it to make t on time, but it was a straight shot.

Quimby is a steep, likely dangerous descent. Anyone whose actually done it can likely chime in on how bad an idea it is.

not that bad.  I did it once then climbed back up just to do it again.

I think decending all the way down Mt. Hamilton is much funner/nicer than Quimby.  I would just take the straight shot if you're not familiar with the area.  Its just that there's no bike lane on Alum Rock/Santa Clara from what I recall, and you have downtown traffic.

Quimby decent is steeper with more switchbacks and blind turns.  Once decended, Quimby is residential with less traffic until Capitol Expressway.  The rest of the roads back to Diridon Caltrain should have bike lanes.

I've taken Alum Rock direct to the station. both times we midday 1 pm train and traffic felt light to me even in downtown...maybe I'm just used to SF traffic.
