Oddly enough I was considering suggesting the same thing, despite the needless extra time it would add to my commute.  Looks like it would make sense to take a 6am-ish BART from the city, arrive in Oakland around 6:20 and catch the 6:40 ferry.  I wonder what the bike utilization is on those ferries, there's supposed to be space for about 30 bikes.

Post here if you are interested and we'll see if there might be enough people to do this in a more organized fashion (start times would be easy because there are only three ferry times).  The ferry schedule is here:  http://eastbayferry.com/ssf/

I'm out of town Friday, and Scott called a ride for tomorrow, so let's say
Thursday?

Glad I'm not the only one who had that idea when they saw the added route.

Let's make this official for Thursday. BART leaves 24th/Mission at 6:02am,
arrives 12th St Oakland at 6:21. That leaves just under 20 mins to get from
there to the ferry, a distance Google Maps says is just under a mile. If
someone with better knowledge of Oakland thinks we should get off at West
Oakland instead, we could do that. Ferry leaves at 6:40, arrives South San
Francisco at 7:15. From there we can follow the Bay Trail out to the
airport and the normal Bayway, should put us at work at a reasonable hour.

For those who don't want to pay the BART fare in order to make their commute
longer, meet us at the ferry terminal (Oyster Point Marina) in South San
Francisco. It's on the bay trail, and while that's slightly longer than the
standard Bayway it's pretty and worth the ride.

I live in Oakland and was thinking this ferry route would be a great way for me to take a break from my BART commute to SF on occasion. 12th Street is the closest stop to Jack London, although it's about a 5-7 minute bike ride from West O. if you'd like to disembark there. I'll do my best to make it and meet some of you!

Cheers,

Correcting the date in the subject line... I did in fact mean Thursday 6/7.

I'll be curious to see how the bike situation works out. Since the ferry picks up in Alameda first, we will join a partly full ferry at Jack London. That said, I'm hoping they will find room if there are more than 30 bikes.

We can always hop back on bart and do dirty eastbayway I guess.

I take the ferry from Jack London Square Oakland daily and I can almost guarantee that the early ferries never are full for bikes. The 8:10 ferry will have the most cyclists, and the ridership is still low for the SSF route. The ferry at the same time for SF is quite crowded for bikes but no one has ever been denied passage in the past 2 years I've biked-ferried from Oakland. Enjoy the excursion.

I may be grumpy when I try to get myself up at 5:30 tomorrow morning, but
I'm still planning to do this. Will board BART at Powell, rear car.
Anyone else, even just from the South San Francisco ferry terminal?

I have a late night on tap (literally) tonight, so I am doing a later ride, if any.  let's plan this with a bit more lead time for next time and get a posse.

you should still go pioneer it tho :)

Chances are slim for me tomorrow now as well; I've got some family issues that have cropped up and will most likely be dealing with them - hope to meet all of you in the near future!

I am in. Will be on the 6:40 ferry and riding to Palo Alto from there at around 16 mph. I will be in a yellow-green vest. I don't know the route but will either find someone or figure it out along the way.

I'm out. It's already too late and I've got some more things to do. We should try it later with a bigger group though!

Success!  The ferry trip is quite pleasant and the 6:40 departure from Oakland arrives with plenty of time to meet a typical 7am rollout (Hobe and company caught us just past the airport).  There's a neat view on the way out of Oakland where you can see the Golden Gate Bridge behind the Bay Bridge (barely visible in one photo below).  I'm not sure all the boats are configured the same way, but the Gemini has front and rear bike racks.  This morning they were only using the rear racks, which were about 3 bikes past capacity (see photo).  Also, if you catch the wrong BART, don't worry - the Lake Merritt station is just as convenient as 12th St/City Center.

There's one reverse trip in the morning which would make for a neat way to do the extended middle-east bayway if you can accept a late arrival at work.

There had been discussion of this a while back I think the goal was Alameda, then south. I don't remember if anyone tried it, or just decided the reverse was too late (this was from Ferry Terminal).

The timing of the earliest ferries isn't that early:

SF Ferry Building to Jack London Square: 6:30 - 7:05 (and Alameda Main St, 7:15)
SF Ferry Building to Alameda Harbor Bay Isle: 7:00 - 7:25
and now
Oyster Point to Alameda Main St: 7:20 - 7:50

Figure an extra ~10 minutes for Harbor Bay Isle, ~30 minutes for the others, compared to San Leandro BART.

Great ride and thanks to Nathan for showing me the way! I'll bring my road bike next time and try to hang with the group. Made it to downtown Palo Alto at 9:30.
