Myself and a few friends, who are just starting to get miles in, are looking for a ride route this weekend. We have done OLH, we did the Marin headlands....we were thinking of something along Highway 1, south of Pacifica, north of Half Moon Bay??? We are open though to your suggestions. We have about 2.5 hours at most for this particular ride. Not a lot, but better than nothing.

Anyone looking to join would of course be welcome...we are new here...

Thanks in advance for any and all suggestions.

There's basically nothing but Planet of the Apes (very broken pavement and dirt) and hwy 1 between Pacifica and Half Moon Bay.

If you want to go in that direction, and be on the ocean side, I'd suggest starting further south. Pescadero would be a good spot; you could ride north on Stage Rd, up hwy 84, right on Pescadero Creek Rd, stay right on Pescadero Creek Rd, then get back to Pescadero again and have garlic artichoke bread.

In that area you also have west Old La Honda and west Alpine which could be incorporated into this loop.

Agree with Lina re not much besides PoTA.

Instead, I would opt to go north and do Muir Woods/Stinson...maybe something along these lines:

http://app.strava.com/activities/40222809 (there are any number of options to extend this too).

i think the bigger constraint is 2.5hr. i think you'd be hardpressed
to make an sf/hmb/sf ride in that time.

i think you could do it (w/ some poaching to avoid just out/back) if
pacifica was far enough but you'd still have to be jamming the whole
way.

2.5 hours limits your options quite a bit, and what you can do will depend on where you start and how comfortable you are with riding dirt. Planet of the Apes (also known as San Pedro Mtn) is really fun, but the ride through Pacifica to get there isn't great -- a lot of overhead miles to get to the good stuff.

If you haven't done Paradise Loop, that's one of the most common roadie rides out here.

My extensive map staring (and Ammon's sekrit maps) say that poaching would be very difficult to do in that area.

I find that riding to Sharp Park and back (descending or ascending, whichever you prefer) can be done from my place in the Mission in about 2 hours but it's a pretty boring ride.

If you want to start in SF then pretty much anything that's 2.5 hours will be boring.

How about Butterlap? Those of us who have done it 100 times might be a little jaded, but you do see some beautiful parts of the San Francisco.

It's just around 2 hours, I think, maybe a bit less.

yeah, i'm never sure how painful poaching in the water district would
really be. the map shows some tempting entries, but i don't want to
get the feds on me.

Ammon would probably know, but I believe the gates are very serious.

Personally I wouldn't risk it.

I've been taking some friends who are just starting on a few rides around the city. They like the butterlap but also enjoyed a ride I took them on up Mt. San Bruno.  Something like this might be nice (in whatever direction) and maybe throwing in the Presidio and/or Legion of Honor.

the twitterlap is also nice for packing a bunch into a short time.

Nathan was suggesting the twitterlap to me last week...looks like the twitterlap twitter account isn't being used now, though (https://twitter.com/Twicycles/status/232945751125266432) ...anyone happen to know if there's a different account or an email list or something? thanks...

This is a fun route if you don't mind carrying your bike a lot. Don't steal my KOM!

Strava seems to think you're a man... you show up 3rd overall on "De Long St. Recovery Segment" and the QOM is a good 30 seconds slower.

yeah strava sucks. i hadn't set my gender before uploading that ride which means strava thought i was a man, then i changed it, but strava didn't update.

and somehow my awesome KOM no longer shows you that i have it in my list of achievements. lame. this 30 meter segment is SO MINE though. my friend wasn't even matched on it even though he did it too.

whoa, fancy! thanks!

too bad my own segment doesn't show up... that's my favorite segment. but i guess it's fair if it claims i'm the only one who rode it. :( (although rand rode it too!)

Yeah, riding from sf there's not enough time to go south of Pacifica. Only interesting option would be Sweeney Ridge: paved climb from Sneath in San Bruno or dirt climb from Fassler in Pacifica. Great views on all sides. Use the strava segment explorer to find.

For planet of the apes with little time try driving to Pacifica and parking by the trailhead at the end of Higgins Way. If steep fireroads excite you try climbing up Montara mountain: http://app.strava.com/segments/637133 which apparently is slated for one of this year's low key hill climbs: http://lowkeyhillclimbs.com/2013/week8/

Does MC have two mailing lists, i.e. public vs. private?

No list is mentioned on the front page or on the contact page of the Mission Cycling website. Google Groups doesn't return any useful result for 'missioncycling' (ironically, that search returns mostly results from the sf2g mailing list).

Going to https://groups.google.com/forum/?hl=en&fromgroups#!forum/missioncycling shows it is not public and membership must be approved. Am I missing something?
