Hey old SF2G buddies

I know a few of you have long haul truckers, well has anyone ever been able to find replacement tubes for this touring bike?  John & I are flying to nicaragua in a week with our bikes and he can't find spare tubes of the right size anywhere, the bike stores claim they've never heard of a bike tube that size, and we can't find any online!

says this on the tube:  28 x 1 3/8  x 1 5/8

thanks, and if anyone has any recommendations for good rides/places to stay/things to do for us biking from nicaragua to belize then shout!

Hmm. The bike has 26" wheels or 700cc for the standard build, depending on the frame size. I have a 51cm frame and 26" tubes are a piece of cake to find. That could change if you built it up yourself but it would presumably throw off the geometry with 26" on the larger frames and vice versa.

From Surly's website for the complete LHT builds ....

26 x 1.5", Black wall. On 42-54cm frames
700c x 37mm, Black wall. 56-62cm frame

As for the size the tube says, that has me baffled. My best guess is the stamping of the tube is poor and the 6 looks like an 8. Unless you got 29" wheels on an LHT. As usual, Sheldon Brown has a nice long page about various tire sizes at:  http://www.sheldonbrown.com/tire-sizing.html.

Where did you buy the bike from? Did they even turn up empty handed?

I've usually seen that bike w/ 700c wheels. What type of tires do you have on it?  Tubes aren't for only 1 tire size, but fit a range of tires so you don't need an exact match with your old tubes.

By "tube" I'm assuming you mean the rubber that fills with air inside the tire, and not part of the frame.

Yeah when I read this I assumed she was talking about picking up an extra down tube.

For inner tubes just go get some 700x30-38 or so cyclocross or touring tubes.  Easy to find.  The 28-inch measurement is just lame naming.

In a pinch, regular 700x20-25 tubes work too; they're just more likely to flat, I think.

yes I am just talking about regular tubes for when you get a flat, we're not gonna bring spare tyres, just tubes.  For some reason this size has all the bike stores stumped!

good idea whoever said to call the store where we bought the bike - they said the 28x13/8x15/8 translates to 700x37, which is a standard size, so we will go pick up a few...

thanks  :o)
