OT: is Strava not showing maps in the feed view for short "activities" among people you follow?

I've noticed that above a certain threshold distance, Strava tends to show me a map for a given activity in my feed, but below that threshold, I just see a bare summary of the activity: distance, maybe feet climbed, maybe time in motion (cycling) or pace information (running). The threshold seems to be about 5 miles, though sometimes I'll instantly see a track for something shorter. And I'll always see tracks for my own activities.

Behavior seems to be consistent between web and mobile. Anybody know what's going on here? It seems weird; I've been trained to think no map == this is an activity that someone entered manually, and there is no GPS data.

I can't compare web and mobile, but I can tell you that when I worked at Strava, there was an activity feed re-design that
-gave more space to "group rides" (rides algorithmically determiend to have multiple riders)
-took away space from rides that are short/commutes
So group rides would have the largest (cross- screen) maps, solo but long rides would have a thumb nail map, and short/commute rides may have no map.  I thought that I still see thumb nail maps of commutes in my feed, but I have to admit that I am not so attentive to be able to say that for sure.  It sounds from sf2g like there was another UI re-design launched today, so maybe there are more changes I have not seen yet.

Faye's right – the feed was redesigned earlier this year on both the web and the mobile apps (the new apps were released just a couple weeks ago).  The view is still chronological but not all activities are treated equally. The ranking takes in account whether an activity was done in a group, as well as some other metrics such as distance, duration, elevation, suffer score.

The end goal is to prune stuff like short commutes and junk miles and focus on activities that are worthy of being kudo'ed or commented on. You'll still see them in the feed but they're displayed without a map - it also looks like kudo'ing takes an extra click for those. So, while a quick stroll from your home to 4th & King might be demoted, big group rides like SF2Gs get to be displayed much more prominently.

Cheers,
