i'm curious what other people (or even kahnfections) on the list think of this?

the temporary signs basically get run over as people making california stops hit the sign that they're not ready for (since they're not permanent they also get moved regularly).

in my area, the cross streets aren't the speeding targets (although no one really stops) since van ness and folsom are motor speedways.

My own view is anything that moves car traffic off of most streets is a good thing. Close the Valencia corridor to car traffic from 8am to 8pm, install automatic bollards to keep cars off.

Make pedestrian and residential enforced slow streets. Provide specific corridors for cars.

All of it. Make that permanent.

yeah, that's my feeling. the trials have been weirdly run, maybe the city was bit by mission's red laning but weird regardless.

I think I have a similar view. From my experience, 20th St has not been a successful "Slow Street" because there are still cars everywhere. By comparison, Sanchez St, Page St, or Lake St are so calm that there are kids riding bikes and playing in the street, or I can go for a jog in the middle of the street. There is no way to do that on 20th St.

I filled out the survey and basically wrote this.

Go do an unnecessary SF2G and go take a gander at Castro Street in Mountain View.

It's still sort of funky in that they cobbled it together and some of the intersections are controlled with sawhorses and tape and whatever ROAD CLOSED signs they could gather, but it's pretty amazing to see that street 100% closed to traffic from Evelyn to Mercy. And it's still sort of funky because the usage has followed the pandemic waves where sometimes it's just an empty-ish street to times where it's fairly lively but in a dystopian way, masks, etc...

Currently pretty much every restaurant on the street has moved their entire inventory of tables into the middle of the street, and is either serving or where you take your take out. There is one spot with a big tent that some place is doing Yoga or Pilates classes. There are some spots where there are no tables that they have painted big circles on the road six feet apart so you could I guess put a blanket down and eat your takeout? Or just bring your beer from Janes? I don't know if MV has relaxed any open alcohol rules, Healdsburg definitely just opened up the plaza area for alcohol consumption.

I'm very much team quarantine so I think it's a little overpopulated right now - last Friday I went to get take out and it felt like Mardi Gras. But if you use your vision to imagine the pandemic being over, and removing the cobbled together road controls, putting in some public seating, it would be flat out glorious. I don't care one whit about the "privatization of public space" from some eateries using up 400-500 square feet of roadway to use as part of their restaurant , or yoga classes - because by doing so they have improved the value of the adjoining public space by removing the cars. That "public space" is completely useless as a roadway.

The cross streets are still open, the intersection with Castro are all 4 way stops, where there were stoplights they just turned them off. Pedestrians rule the intersection, vehicles crossing are not aggressive at all. Certainly the intersection is not a pedestrianized area, cars are allowed to cross, but they might just have to wait, they have zero priority.

That is what I want for Valencia.

In the neighborhoods I'm in these days:
* Merrimac, 4th, Mission Bay Blvd N/S, from MBBS to Long Bridge Street. This includes Spark Social, and would allow expansion of what's already a delightful thing.
* 18th Street in Potrero from Connecticut to Pennsylvania.
* 22nd Street in Dogpatch from the Caltrain station to Illinois.
* San Bruno Ave in Portola from Silver to Paul Ave.
* Third Street in Bayview from Oakdale to Carroll*

Some of these can just be weekend closures, but by removing cars it opens businesses to more seating, more options, and generally better experience in the city. Why shouldn't we push for a more european model for our cities?

Lastly, if nothing else was shown over this last year, it's not the end of the world to allow folks to drink and chill on the sidewalk.

* 3rd is a major thoroughfare. But it's also often blocked by double parked cars, trucks, and others all along some parts of that area anyway.

I'll talk to Judy to get more thoughts.  I do think the signs get ignored, and at least on our part of 20th, it probably hasn't really added much to foot/bike traffic (could be wrong about that).  I do think it makes our bare bones temporary parklet somewhat more pleasant.
