Hi groupmind,

I’m looking at a route to combine a couple specific climbs in Napa/Sonoma. I plan to climb Trinity but will start in Napa. Does anyone know which is better Sonoma Hwy or Arnold Dr?

Thanks,
Bret

Depends on where you’re going? If you’re going south from Trinity it’s probably fine to take 12, or even descend Cavedale, which is still a one lane road but was repaved a couple years ago so it’s not as sketchy as it used to be. If you’re going up to Kenwood I’d take Trinity - Dunbar - Arnold - warm springs. Lawndale over there was repaved and is a nice one to hit if you’re in the area.

Might also be worth considering the other way around. Going up Cavedale from 12 and down Trinity into Napa is nice, then you can do dry creek or Veeder from there. Moon mountain is a good out and back just south of Cavedale on 12 (also repaved).

On the Sonoma County side?

I've always approached it from Arnold to Dunbar.

I got to Arnold via Warm Springs from Bennett Valley. Bennett Valley can kind of suck if you aren't off peak, the only time I did it was in the TT at 6 AM on a Saturday. Are you going around the South of the Ridge to Sonoma?  Arnold is definitely better down there.

If you're climbing from that side, there's also Cavedale, which I like better than Trinity, it's also been recently repaved, then it intersects at the top of Trinity. With Cavedale repaved, you could go up Mt Veeder from Napa, down Cavedale and up Trinity, and not get crashed by a pothole, but it's narrow so you'd need to take care on blind corners for traffic.

If  you descend Trinity into Sonoma County, take some care on the top, some of the turns in the upper 3rd have some really nasty decreasing radiuses - SRCC stages a person with a skeleton at one particularly bad corner.

I should have sent this in the first post. I’m trying to climb Patrick Rd in the same ride so here’s the route I came up with.

I know 12 is going to suck, but it’s not that long on it.

This is what it would look like to do a little more of the valley on quieter roads plus the Cavedale climb instead of trinity: https://www.strava.com/routes/3251357839118553666

There's a lot of other options around these parts if you wanted to add on (e.g. veeder instead of staying on dry creek, lovall valley loop, some of the other out & back climbs along the route like moon mountain, etc.). There's only a small section of 12 that doesn't have a shoulder just before Cavedale.
