Just to let everyone know that INGOTS are now fully QCA Accredited. If
you go to the OpenQuals web site at www.openquals.org.uk and put TLM in
the search it will pull up the certificates (Note INGOTs is nto a QCA
name so searching the OpenQuals site for INGOTs won't find anything!

There are some changes although largely its what was outlined at the
last training. Daniel has been beavering away to build an on-line
assessment recording facility into the web site which is just about done
and then we hope to have all the multiple choice testing we need to do
on-line by September. We will be doing further assessor training in
early June. Some students have already started blogs for the Gold INGOT
now and at a meeting for developing the Level 3 IT Diploma at QCA a
suggestion I made for using contribution to an Open Source community
project as an example for the 120 hour project went down well. They also
agreed to take out a reference to MS Project as I said it was
inappropriate advertising :-)

We have also got Inkululeko Technologies on board as our South African
agents and they have a substantial grant from the Shuttleworth
Foundation to get things going in South Africa but then into other
African countries. We have a good link with the chief education person
for IT in Botswana, for example and a good meeting with the head of
UNESCO. My visit to Poland also generated a lot of interest with the
vast majority of teachers that attended my 2 hour INGOT presentations
saying they would like to take up the certificates - some language and
regulatory issues there, but QCA seem fairly open to us working with
Inkululeko and so its probably a matter of getting a commercial partner
in Poland to do the same.

The downside is that I have a lot of visits to make to schools now as
well as training and other meetings with QCA and e-skills so I'm not
going to find it easy to contribute much to other things such as FLOSSIE
this year.

Regards,

Ian

Well done Ian - I know this has taken (and will take) a huge effort
from you.

We'll have to limp along while you're working on this. Any more ideas
about FLOSSIE anyone? I'm looking to book a Birmingham location for
16th/17th July. £50 registration - what about £100 with display
space?

rgds,
Richard

Kudos, Ian! Having my students' Bronze INGOT Certificates count as
"real" qualifications is a powerful motivator, and I very much look
forward to offering Silver and Gold Certificates in the timetable.

It's especially pleasing that the community service element is fully
recognised, which is something our teachers feel seriously lacking in
the existing qualifications.

Regarding FLOSSIE, this term will be critical for my continued role at
school, and hence for my plans to develop a coherent, reliable network
there, and I'm afraid that I too will be less available to push FLOSSIE
2007 along. Having said that, the dates and location suit me fine,
although state schools in or area won't be out on holiday until the 20th
July.

Best regards,

John

Btw, why are they branded TLM under OpenQuals?

TLM is The Learning Machine. This is the Awarding Body, Like AQA,
Edexcel, OCR etc. The INGOTS is really a generic name for the
qualifications a bit like GCSEs. The qualifications themselves have to
conform to QCA's titling formats so Entry Level
certificate/qualification in "blah blah" where blah blah describes what
skills and knowledge the certificate is testing in our case Open ICT
Systems and Office Applications. I even had to put ICT in because I
originally just submitted it as Open Systems and Office Applications.
Basically you put forward the specification as a proposal and they say
what is wrong, you fix it and re-submit. The nearer you get it first
time the quicker it is to get accredited. It actually took about 4
months from first submitting the specifications to accreditation. I'm
told that was pretty quick for a first attempt, especially to get pre-16
accreditation as some take literally years to get through and many don't
get pre-16 accreditation at all. I had to submit a full mapping against
the NC programmes of study for that but the good thing is it shows you
can do INGOTs in KS3 and get a proper vocational qualification without
doing more than what is statutory anyway.

It would be very helpful to us is anyone gets the chance to tell
teachers about this. They can get students a vocational qualification
without having to do anything other than what would be considered good
practise and it will count for points in league tables and be less
expensive than conventional GCSEs. They can even pay with e-learning
credits. The big challenge we face now is to get the word out without a
significant marketing budget :-)

I already told Exeter College's ICT education lead and a deputy head
of an Exeter school. I even blogged about,
http://eduspaces.net/stevelee/weblog/165374.html.

That may help with the viral marketing ;-)

Yishay Mor should be able to help in the viral marketing of this at
the academic end of education - I believe he's on any number of lists!
Asking Ofset and related projects to put it on their websites would
also get some hits, and if the Shuttleworth Foundation haven't yet got
behind it then their reach gets ever greater.
