Hi All,

I apologize in advance for any double-posting, I am sending this through Google Groups and personal email addresses.  Please add the Google Groups email address to your address book if you have not already done so.  If you are not on the Google Groups and would like to be added just let me know!

We had a very productive meeting last week to really start talking about Best Practices within mentoring agencies.  We are looking at materials printed by Mentor (www.mentoring.org) which focuses on moving the Mentoring field forward.  We have started talking about the screening of mentors and mentees, including applications and in-person interviews.  We are actively discussing the differences between DOJ clearance and FBI clearance and deciding what the minimum clearance should be.  In addition, we are looking at the minimum amounts of training that mentors and mentees should have prior to beginning the mentoring relationship, as well as, what on-going training hours should look like.

As we start to move forward as a coalition (hopefully with added benefits from the community), we can decide what the minimum requirements are to be included in the coalition.  By doing this we not only brand ourselves as a coalition of high quality mentoring programs but also help potential mentees & families/guardians feel comfortable with signing up!

Please review the following documents, the first two really talk about the basics of what a mentor program should have as a minimum and what a program can do to continue to enhance itself.  For those that are not familiar with Mentor, the 3rd link is for the full document “How to Build a Successful Mentoring Program Using the Elements of Effective Practice.”  After reviewing the first 2 documents, please email me with your thoughts around minimum requirements for screening (including background clearance) and training of mentors & mentees, by Friday, 1/4/2013.

We will meet in January to continue the dialog and incorporate all comments.

Hi Everyone,
Just a quick reminder that we are meeting today at Building Futures from 3:30pm-5:30pm to continue the discussion around Best Practices in the Mentoring Field and deciding on what practices are "must-haves" as an agency involved in the SF Mentor Coalition.  Your voice is important as we move forward.
Thanks!
Laurie
