TAC mailing list began about 30 years ago, at the birth of the public Internet.  Initially it was a cobbled together "list" using simple Unix Shell language commands to save email addresses to a file that would send to everyone listed   it worked and grew.  It became GSSP and has/had world known astronomy personalities.

A fun little local bay area astronomy mailing list.

Now it seems to have spread far and wide.

So, where are you?  No need to share much especially if you just lurk.  How about simply a single word or two with the country and city/town you currently live in?

Might be fun and surprising!

Well my dear TACOs, I'm still in Texas after moving here during the height of covid when hubs was accepted at MD Anderson.

I'm north of the Houston Nebula but am finding some great dark skies up near Abilene, where a friend of mine lives on a ranch.  (We also target practice).  I've been back to the SF Bay area a couple of times since 2021 and plan on more trips back, hopefully for longer than just work.

And I still keep up with the happenings in the Bay Area - so I can keep up with the rest of y'all.

Miss Montebello lots, as well as Lake San Antonio and the Sierras - just learning to love Texas (except for the humidity!)

I'm in Paso Robles.

Work brought me here but I knew it was always for LSA 40 min away.

I was in the Bay Area since '79.

Bino-Handle Systems went to NEAF in '17(I went '11-'15). Prototypes are still being brought forth, slowly, on YouTube.

BTW Stacy, a lot of the Houston amateur astronomers go to a place called Leakey, TX to do their observing. I also remember being told that there was some site near Columbus, TX which should be a lot closer to you
When I lived in Texas, I always wanted to observe from Fort McKavett; the attraction for me was that it was the least I could drive west from Austin to get to a "black zone" on the 2016 LP maps. You may have better options around Devil's River State Park near Del Rio, TX. Houston Astronomical Society has a very good contingent of astronomers, I guess the most accomplished on the visual observing side is Larry Mitchell. Keith Rivich who posts excellent objects every month on CloudyNights also is from the Houston area.

Akarsh

I thought it might be more useful to have this on a map.  So I created a shared map, with edit permission to all on this mailing list (if logged into google account.)    Click the map pin to "Add marker."  You can give it a name and description.    You can associate photos with it of your gear if you want.   Or reveal next to nothing.   Doesn't have to be your exact house.    Once created, click on it again and you can change the icon and the colour.   Suggest red for observers.  I have a "sites" layer (yellow suggested) for non-secret observing sites.        You can even upload your own icons -- built in you will find binoculars, telescope, camera, sun, star and possibly others.

Brad,

I think that's a very interesting and useful utility for TAC community, and would be better announced in a new thread where it isn't buried in this ongoing discussion.  It might be further developed as well.  Nice going.

I am originally from the Santa Cruz Mountains and was far too close to the marine layer for consistent astronomy.  The seeing was fantastic at times, but the fog at home definitely was an issue.  I live
in Fall River Mills now.  Bortle 2 skies at 3300' feet with great transparency, assuming the forests are not on fire!   My biggest gripe about living in the North State at 41 deg., is astronomical twilight times in the summer requires some serious napping.

Emeryville, CA

When I lived south in San Jose, I'd head down to pinnacles every month. Been going to lake Sonoma since I moved here. I hadn't been out for almost a year until last month.

This group has been a god send for me. Every time I had a hiccup with astronomy or otherwise, y'all have been there, so thank you all from the bottom of my heart :)

My father once told me that respect for the truth comes close to being
the basis for all morality. "Something cannot emerge from nothing,"
he said. This is profound thinking if you understand how unstable
"the truth" can be. -- Frank Herbert, Dune

Hi, this is Bill ONeil, past VP at SJAA (way after Mark Wagner). I lived in Sunnyvale, CA for 30 years.
I still pay dues to SJAA, SCAC, and EAS, to support my favorite Clubs (Oh, and FPOA)

But I now live in Shoreline, WA (a little north of Seattle). Our daughter married a guy from Bellevue, WA, and 'suggested'
we move up here to be with the grandkids! So, in 2018, we did. Now, two grandsons, ages 2 and 6, are keeping us busy.

Seattle is nothing like Sunnyvale! I really miss RCDO and GSSP!  I joined the Seattle Astronomical Society (SAS) when I moved up here and do a lot of school Outreach. I also host monthly public star parties at Paramount School Park in Shoreline, WA (weather permitting!)

SAS bought some nice observing property out in Goldendale, WA (near the Columbia River Gorge).  But it is a 5-hour drive from Seattle.  I manage a few 4-night, New Moon weekends when I can.
Check out my "Retired" business Card (attached).

Best Wishes to all my Bay Area friends!
Bill O'

I'm in San Francisco.  I moved to Bay Area in '98.  I don't have a scope yet because it is living in Montara.  It's a Celestron C8 (this model is near and dear to my heart and an old familiar). Now that we have cleared a space for it, I'm hoping to get it soon and join you at Henry Coe or some nearby places in the not too distant future.

Best

Just a reminder, since many are still replying to the "Where are you" thread, since it regularly pops up to prompt you, that I also made a different way to say where you are, putting yourself on the TAC Member map.  You all have write permission on it

In addition to making your pin on the map (see other thread for full details about how to best do it) you can include notes about yourself, as people are doing here, and you can even put in an album of photos (yourself, your gear, an astrophoto you've taken, whatever you like or don't like.)    The nice thing is it shows on a map so you can see what other members are near to you.

After you make a pin and put in a name/nickname and description, click on it again to set the colour (red for members) and icon (binocular, camera, scope, custom upload)
