LRGB filter set thoughts?

Hello everyone,

I'm in the market for a new LRGB filter set. The application will be a remote scope I'm installing on Mt Hamilton (private site, not the observatory). So not exactly super dark, except when the bay gets socked in with weather (Bortle 4 ish on most nights, but dropping to 2 or 3 if we have low clouds). Obviously I'll have SHO as well, but picking the LRGB set is the main question.

I'm debating between the Astronomik (type 2c or deep sky) and the Antila (v series or dark series). The question seems to be, does one want:

1. overlapping RGB bands
2. strict transitions between bands
3. gaps between bands

I'm guessing the gaps between bands are no longer effective against light pollution as nearly 100% of the LP is LED these days. Can anyone comment on experiences with these 4 filter sets and what might work best in this application?

Oh, and the scope will be a 4" F/7 APO. Sensor will range from IMX492 (2um pixels for galaxy season) to IMX455 (3.76um pixels).

I have two sets of the V-Pros and I think they do a good job. I can’t say much about LP effects compared to the darks but the V-Pros are a bit more common. 

On a side note, I also have 2 sets of the 3nm SHOs from Antlia as well and I also think they do a good job. 

For haloing, Oiii is the only one with possible splotches on EXTREME stretches and overexposures (I take 10 min subs from my backyard with all filters sometimes). From a darker site I suspect you won’t have any issues. 

Overall I really like the sets. I’m pretty picky about haloing and stuff (I replaced all my OSC filters due to this before) and they do a good job for my environment. I think color wise the LRGB stuff brings out blues much better than my OSC camera with UVIR cut filters. 

Let me know if you want some example pictures or raws. I used these filters on various scopes such as an Esprit 120 @F7, a Quattro 250P @F4, and a SQA55.

Hi Mark – I have the Astronomik Deep-Sky RGB filters, and coincidentally I also use them with a IMX492 sensor. I’m happy with them and they give me no halos or reflections, but like you I’m left with the curiosity to see if the Type 2c filters would give a different color rendering.
If your refractor has some residual chromatism, you may want to get the L filter version “L-3” with a transmission window that starts at 420nm to cut out the worst of the violet fringing.

Thanks Joel and Francesco. I happen to have the Type 2C's in 2" that I've used with my SVX152T and have been happy with them, but like you Francesco, I wonder what is to be gained/lost. On luminance, I am blessed with a stable of SVX refractors, so no residual chromatism. 

I'll probably just wind up getting whatever I can find the best deal on, used or new. My gut tells me it won't make a huge difference.
