You can imagine my surprise when my podcast app suggested this new episode of The Actual Astronomy podcast:

Congratulations Richard! It will be a pleasure to listen to it on my way to work tomorrow.

You were really interesting, and the background about how TAC and the GSSP came about was terrific!

I'm going to have to jump ahead and listen to this one now.  I believe the name is The Actual Astronomy Podcast.

Thanks, Howard. I really enjoyed your interview with Chris and Shane back in 2023. They should have you back on. Will you be attending GSSP this year? I haven’t been in a while, but I’m considering going this year.

Chris and Shane are great to talk astronomy with, and I’d enjoy going back on their podcast sometime.

I am planning on attending the GSSP this year, and hope you can make it too Richard.

Redownloaded podcasts to listen and it was a great episode! Good to learn about how TAC came about and your experiences over the years.

Your geniality really comes across in that interview, Richard. Plus, I'd always thought of Paul Sterngold the Cantor as Mr Buy and Sell. You're right on up there.
And when describing your 16" white solid tube instrument, you mention a friend calling you The Beastmaster. "In fact he still does." Sure enough.

Thanks, Jamie. Yup, that was Paul who got me into buy/sell.😊 And of course my compadre is the bestower of monikers.

Richard, I enjoyed listrening to your session with The Actual Astronomy Podcast and the history of TAC.  Your recent interest in observing open clusters is similar to mine.  My switch last year to observing open clusters was a new observing experience for me and a welcomed change from observing faint and singular obect planetaries and galaxies. Most of the open clusters I logged this past year were easily visible in my 5" and 6", as well as 16", telescopes but there were challenge OCs that were very faint and small (distant OCs) at mag 13, sparse in structure and hidden (blended) within a rich milky way field of stars.  These were more difficult to spot than singular very faint galaxioes and planetaries in a dark starless field.

Thanks, Peter! Yes, hunting down small, faint, galaxies with no detail was starting to wear thin. Spending 20 minutes to find a barely there smudge, despite the amazing fact that I was observing something that was millions of light years away, got old. Playing with refractors has been a welcome and satisfying change for me.
