The announcement below was just posted at the Peninsula Astronomical Society Google group:

Hello,

My name is Ken Sablinsky and I work at Orion Telescopes.  Previously I was the manager of the Orion retail store in Cupertino, but now work out of our home office in Watsonville.  I’ve attached a flyer for the Watsonville Store Sale that takes place on Saturday, Sept 16th.  In case any of your club members might be interested in this event, I was wondering if you might pass the word along to your member list.

Thank you!

-Ken Sablinsky

I hope this isn't a liquidation sale....

It's by no means a liquidation sale. They've been doing these all day parking lot sales for a lot of years.

Does anything good typically turn up?

They typically have lots of giveaways. Years ago we stopped by the Cupertino store during a sale and were observing through one of the solar scopes when a store employee came up and informed us our son (8 or 9 at the time) had just won a free dob! The irony is he was saving money for an Xbox and I had convinced him to buy a dob instead (dad paid 1/2). Suddenly he had two scopes and could sell one and get his Xbox....so much for that plan.

To dispel any thoughts of liquidation sale.... this from a very reliable source within the company who I pointed to this thread:

"Yes, it’s a sale in the physical retail store – which will include what’s already on sale on the website, seconds, floor models, samples, and what we fondly call “space junk” internally (a lot of times that means a company has sent us a sample of something we wouldn’t really consider selling online – might be a model of the space shuttle or something like that).

There will also be two giveaways – one is the free Meade binos to the first 50 customers/visitors. The other is a free mystery gift to those who buy an LX85 package (not an OTA or mount alone – has to be the scope + the mount) – I don’t think that second giveaway was in the flier Ken has because we just announced it via email yesterday. If you were thinking of stopping by, I’m not sure if contractors qualify for the giveaways (typically we tell employees they don’t), but I can certainly check for you if that’s of interest.

There will also be solar viewing – at least one Coronado scope set up and one of our Eclipse Plus kits – so we can let people observe the Sun.

Does that help? To answer one of the questions – it’s definitely not a liquidation sale. J And I love the Dob story that Mark Scrivener told!"
