28” f3/6 Starstructure with custom made Wells Cargo Trailer.  Kennedy mirror.  Comes with a Starstructure “transport assistant” which allows ONE person to set up and tear down the scope.  No lifting required.  And this device has a crank which allows the attachment/removal of the UTA while standing on the ground (no ladder needed).

Over the years Bob has generously shared views with me ( and many others of course) in his 28”, and I can say this is a truly excellent scope which has provided many stunning views.

The transport mechanism is superb, allowing Bob, who is in his eighties, to easily take the scope in and out of his trailer.

And being a Starstructure owner, I can attest to the fact that these scopes perform just as well now as the day we got them.

If you have any interest in this aperture, my opinion it least is this is the one to get!

Best,

Alan

The price factors the trailer, important to note. Bob’s trailer is light weight and small enough, I think he pulls it with a crossover if I’m not mistaken.

Of course I’m not looking for a 28”, but I hope someone else is! Star structure has their user operation comfort nailed down, and I’m using their one-person setup system as inspiration for mine.

Regards
Akarsh

Also not mentioned is that the scope has a full Go To system (Servocat drive) that works seamlessly with either an ArgoNavis or Nexus.

I wish.     at 71 (next week), my big scope days are over.    my eyes, while still fine for day to day, just don't do the dark sky thing as well as they did a few years ago, and my bod sure doesn't enjoy doing the big scope thing anymores, or all night outdoors things.   The trailer wouldn't cut it for me, as I want to tow my camp trailer, so any scope would have to fit in my truck, which is currently a large SUV (7 ft flat floor with middle and 3rd row seats folded).

For me, the Obsession Classic 20" f/5 was peak astronomy.  It was all manual, a telrad being the primary finder, and that suited me just fine.   I picked it up as a donation to my club in 2017 and used it extensively until 2023, I guess thats 5-6 years?   its since been passed on to other club members.  Right after getting it, the club had the primary and secondary replated with enhanced coatings (what they originally came with).   The Telrad workflow was working really well for me, using a tablet covered with a sheet of Rubylith running SkySafari, with telrad circles on the charts, I could find most objects fast.  I could park my Tacoma or F250, and have it unloaded, setup, and collimated in 30 minutes, and packing up didn't take any longer.

Just an update on the sale of my 28".  It has sold.  And I appreciate all the comments made about the scope in this thread.

Hi,

I bought this scope from Bob and unfortunately I don't think I am going to be able to use it.  Since I got it my wife's health has gotten worse and I haven't been able to observe.  And I doubt that will change much in the near term.  I had a 10x10 concrete pad poured for it on the property we have in King City.  So rather than leave it sitting in my shipping container I think I should let someone else have it that will be able to use it.  I paid Bob's asking price, so I would ask that,  I have a little maverick truck and it pulled the trailer no problem.

Please let me know if anyone is interested.  My email is derek dot st dot 1 at gmail dot com.

Sincerely,

Derek

Would this fit in a minivan or would I need the trailer?
Could it be taken in and out of the minivan by one person?
How much heavier is it than a 24”?

Muriel,

The scope is huge and whether or not it would fit in a minivan I don't know.  It doesn't have wheel barrow handles, so too steep of an incline might be difficult for some folks.  As far as a comparison to a 24" I can't be of much help as I have never had one.  As far as the trailer goes I was quite skeptical about getting it, but once it was hooked to my truck it wasn't bad at all.  I drove in stop and go traffic down to King City(near Hunter Liggett) and was surprised at how easy it was.   If you are seriously interested you can contact me and we could set up a time to meet and you could check it out.

Sincerely,

Derek

I sent you an email. What is the weight of the trailer with the telescope? Checking if one of my cars can handle it.

Thanks,

-Muriel

Hi Derek,

I'm by you in Paso. I could purchase the scope and set it up for you at the lake and others so we can use it, at a discounted price though.

I'd use other scopes that night.
