There’s been two interesting Jupiter transits the last two night (Wed & Thu) — both very close to the GRS! In fact, the one tonight (Thursday) – a shadow transit of Europe – is still going on at 7:30 just NW of the red spot. Last night, Ganymede’s disc was visible at the beginning of its transit just after 9:30 and it made an interesting contrast with the GRS.

The parade of transits continues tonight — Io starts to cross Jupiter's disc a few minutes after 9:00, and it’s shadow follows by about an hour (it should be visible before 10:10). Can’t ask for much more convenient timing with Jupiter high in the sky.

Awesome Steve, ready here. Hope things are still acclimating as sky seems steadier than the view, but we all know how localized seeing is.

Later tonight when ( the below average seeing gets better) The Great Red Spot well positioned with Io re-emerging from the disk and a centralized shadow.

I set Sky Safari to when the shadow of Io passed the middle of Jupiter tonight. As a member has said this time set in Sky Safari is as the planet looks at that instant.

I observed til the shadow passed to the middle of Jupiter, 45 minutes ahead from the time in Sky Safari, so right now Jupiter is 45 light minutes away.

A meteor passed just above the planet while observing during a moment pondering it all!

Amazing yellowy moon across Jupiter and sharp shadow last night, even in blah seeing were some moments.

Amazing how far away Jupiter really is from us, let alone the planet Pluto, 5 hours, or Andromeda Galaxy 2.3 million years...

Thanks for the heads-up Steve. I was out observing last night until the shadow went to the middle of Jupiter and the GRS emerged. It was a nice warm evening without dew, although the seeing was pretty crappy for me.

The seeing was also quite soft in Albany, although Io’s shadow has a good contrast so it was still often visible. I could only follow Io’s disk, though, for a few minutes as it started to transit about an hour earlier.

Amazing how sharp the moon and shadow are in iffy seeing!
