Where did March go?! I was hoping to get this out sooner. Oh, well.

These are personal favorites of mine chosen from my observing logs. Although I've marked these for small, medium and large scopes, all these objects should be visible from a reasonably dark site with a four inch and larger scope.

I hope you enjoy!

Richard

Small Scope – NGC 4565 Needle Galaxy in Coma Berenices magnitude 9.6

My Notes with 8” SCT - Bright, large, edge-on with a prominent dark lane bisecting it. Remarkable!

Also in Sue French’s ‘Celestial Sampler’

Caldwell 36

Medium Scope – NGC 3242 Planetary Nebula in Hydra magnitude 7.3 – Ghost of Jupiter

The bigger the scope, the more detail to be seen!

My Notes in 4” refractor - Ghost of Jupiter. Bright, round, bluish. In an 18" dob a central star with concentric rings and a dim outer halo.

Also included in ‘Celestial Sampler’

Caldwell 59

Large Scope - NGC 3621 Spiral galaxy in Hydra magnitude 9.6

My Notes with 18” Obsession - Huge!  Bright with a mottled appearance.

William Herschel notes from 1790, viewed with his 18.7” scope –“Considerably bright, extended 70° north preceding, south following, very gradually brighter in the middle, 7' long, 4' broad within a parallelogram.”

Fancy spring objects sure enough. We were gawking at 4565 thru Mark Tomalonis' new 22" on Wednesday the 18th at the Pinnacles.
3621 made an impression on me in 2012 from Dinosaur Point, with Felix the 11" -
"Sketched. DM. Big fat diffuse oval, uniformly bright, no core, some lanes. Fancy. Set in a kite of 4 stars."

That galaxy sported a supernova, 2 years ago. Got to see it at the Spring Binge in May, with Carter Scholz' finderchart, after Carter had shown it off in his 16".

Lots of great objects to observe or image in the spring sky. It’s hard to choose favorites ! I’m glad to know my choices received the DDK seal of approval. 😊
