I am reading about this galaxy(s)? being positioned well this weekend and wondering the thoughts of the club on it, your combined history's of it and its visibility.

In a world of imagery and instant now's, will be taking a moment to dwell and reflect on past observing accomplishments and what to try to achieve this year visually.

Stay at the eyepiece. The only true sense, that of sight, that connects us with the night.

2403 was in my February favorites post, it’s also on Steve’s Deep Map 600,  so you know its got to be a good object to observe.

Here's my view from Dinosaur Point a while back.  Time to grab another view:

NGC 2403 Cam
18" f/4.5. 7mm Nagler (approx 294x)

Large and diffuse galaxy, chaotic. Distinct core seems featureless, but large, has star at SW edge. Arms seem to be knots, broken off from core, most distinct one is to the NE. Another knot to S with star embedded, another to N of core and closer. Dim diffuse arm seems to extend around and beyond N knot. Another dim knot seems to be to the N off of three stars extended W of galactic core.

I wonder if the "Caldwell" designations actually constitute an IAU recognized catalog.  Created by S&T and Patrick Moore.

I think I was there on that same night of very early 2022. It might have been my first time at Dino, I remember it as a very clear night, and in my notes I have that my SQM-L reported 21.15 mag/arcsec2. By random coincidence, I imaged precisely NGC 2403 on that night: https://app.astrobin.com/i/9s1oim

I also have an image of it from the backyard and would treat it like M33. It is similarly diffuse without many defined dust lanes and also contains huge active Ha regions. NGC 2404 is one of the large Ha knots on it.

What a coincidence, I just looked at it last month from Lake Sonoma with my 10”. The conditions were not optimal and I only saw a brightening with two bright stars and a fainter star. I hope to see a bit more with my 18” next time. The SeeStar captured more details, see picture below.

Akarsh mentioned it in a recent report and Steve Gottlieb has a detailed article about it in the March 2013 edition of Sky and Telescope. The article is called Celestial Fireworks and contains an annotated picture.
