Tonight is iffy but the scope will be out after amazing solar morning.

Between one cloud and the next one, the GRS near meridian is always a nice sight!

Interestingly, I can see Callisto, which has just started its transit. I mean the satellite, not its shadow: its albedo must be significantly lower than Jupiter’s.

Also very interesting was the sudden appearing of Io from the shadow of Jupiter.

I couldn’t resist the temptation to snap an iPhone picture of what the eyepiece was showing:

I don’t think there’s a shadow transit right now; the next one should be Callisto’s tomorrow morning.

Callisto (in transit now) looks much darker than the planet, to the point that it can be taken for a shadow. This is the situation right now:

Excellent Jupiter in good seeing last night with Callisto near the ever storming Great Red Spot (Getting larger??)

Getting collimation perfected with Tak collimation tool / high power eyepiece just to be sure fine details not being missed.Ā

One eye I've got too many floaters (too much solar?) Back to binoviewing with my favorite Ice 80A.

Agreed – Jupiter with the GRS and Callisto was a real treat. Especially if one considers that it had been cloudy most of the day here.
After shutting down the telescope for the night, I also captured a nice Moon ring over Cancer and Leo:

Thanks!

Tonight’s PSA: the GRS has just become visible. Tonight it will take center stage.

Yeah, the weather forecast for the eclipse is not great. But I’m happy that I was able to take a reasonable picture of Jupiter with a nicely prominent GRS:

Seeing is not great tonight in Mountain View, but a transit of the shadow of Europa is currently in progress. The shadow can be seen just south of the GRS.
