Is it ok to join you?  Or are you seeking extra social distancing?

C'mon you guys, Sean and Rozerman. You know the size of the SW lot.
Plus it's very much a public space.

This is great news, given that it’s only an hour away for me. I’m wondering if there’s the possibility of going this weekend — or are weekends still a problem for social distancing?
I’ve been having problems with my telescope, so I’d rather not drive 2h one way only to discover that my entire night is ruined by the platform’s drive mechanism coming loose. 1h one way changes my perspective on this.

Regards
Akarsh

Akarsh, the Southwest Lot should be wide open over the weekend after sunset. There won't be public programs at the Observatory this year, so no crowds.
We certainly have access.

Saturday sounds good to me.

Jamie, how are the rangers there about grabbing a little nap before driving home at sunup?

Are there any special procedures or do I just drive in and squat a two parking spots? (One for car, one for scope?)

Oughta be just fine. I don't know who's rangerin' up there now. Wednesday will be my first night back in a while. But they've been friendly for years and years.

Not posting an OI yet as it's a >2 hour drive for me and the weather has to look good, but I'm hoping to return to the Peak Friday 8/14. If I'm using the predictive app properly there's a double transit on Jupiter. I'd follow that with some deep sky, and by moonrise close out the session with my first look at Mars this go-round.

Left my counterweights at home.  Looks like it's a short night for me.

Ouch!

I’ve sunk perfectly good observing trips because I forgot a cable, memory card, power supply or something. It happens.

However what I always try to do is being a pair of 7x50s on each and every trip. So when all else fails, I know a the simple binoculars will still serve me well.

why I like dobsons.   got the OTA, and my eyepiece case, and my miscellaneous junk bin (finder scope, laser, assorted tools I rarely need, compass and level and stuff I rarely need), and I'm good to go.   of course, now the OTA is the rockerbox+mirror on wheelbarrow wheels + truss poles + top tube assembly, but still it's pretty hard to forget any one of those.   ok, and the ladder, and the ramps but I need the ramps to load it into the truck so I'm not likely to forget them.

I forgot my observing chair for a 3 night calstar trip few years back.
Realized it and bought one of those 'step stool ladders' that I could sit on or at least lean on. Not as good as the chair but it came in handy.
To this day I am using it a lot at home so it was a win-win.
Also on a trip to Grandview one year I realized i had left my ski jacket at home so picked up a hunters outer jacket with full camo in a sporting goods place somewhere still in civilization.    I only wear it for astronomy late at night as I'm embarrased to wear full camo stuff in public as it is not my 'gig'.
