After a long winter the amateur astronomer emerges from his redwood burrow looking for large diffuse objects to devour.
His mount repaired with the help of Televue, the prey has been sighted ….
I went to my Empire Grade site for culmination of Omega Cen at exactly 23:00 PDT. Got set up as close to the south edge of the flat by 22:58 and after lots of sweeping thought the gap in the trees, I swept it up with the NP101/24mm panoptic, with the aid of my iPhone running SkySafari to identify the proper azimuth. The view was surprisingly good as seeing was excellent over the ocean. Through the 13mm many of the brighter stars were just popping out. By far the tastiest view I have had, except for Condon Peak circa 2015 in my C14.
My plan was grab to also grab the Hamburger Galaxy, also in Centaurus, and then M83 in Hydra and head back to bed in under an hour. I swept up M83 which presented hints of spiral arms also within the 26mm and 13mm. This a beautiful example of a face on spiral, but I think it’s much ignored due to its south location, in spite of its apparent brightness. A very tasty object in a dark sky, I’ll bet! The Hamburger Galaxy unfortunately was already in the trees…
After a quick snack on M13 and M57 for desert, and his dopamine fix obtained, the weary astronomer packed up his gear and left just after midnight to return to his burrow for the next opportunity.
