Reading Steve's postings on Jupe's shadow transits has me looking at seeing.  But seeing only really matters if there's something detailed worth looking at.

I do like shadow transits.  I even like Jupiter moon eclipses and reappearances.

Does anyone have a link for:

1. A shadow transit ephemeris for this year.  I'd ;like to plan.
2. Reports (here?) to the awesome triple shadow transit back maybe ten years ago we saw at Montebello?
3. Has there been a quadruple shadow transit observed, or in the cards during our lifetimes?

I would assume that information is available online or can be generated by an astronomy app, but you might want to consider purchasing the the “Observer’s Handbook 2026” from the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada.  Besides having the complete Jupter satellite phenomena (eclipses, transits, occultations), it has a ton of other information, as well as a number of pretty good observing lists such as “Finest NGC Objects”, “Deep-Sky Gems”, “Wide-field Wonders”, “Deep-Sky Challenge Objects”, “Double and Multiple Stars”, “Carbon Stars”, and much, much more.  Of course, these lists don’t change yearly as does the solar system ephemeris.

Not bad for $21.57 + shipping (and you can easily apply a 20% discount, WELCOME20), though you miss the first 2-3 months of the year at this point.

By the way, the only notable event tonight is an eclipse reappearance of Io that occurs about 9:43. Best to be looking a couple of minutes before to the east of Jupiter, as you want to catch it as it pops out of the shadow. Once that happens, there’s nothing more to see.

Thanks Steve.  I bought the RASC book maybe in 1996.  But I agree it contains many interesting items.

I had hoped to find an app that would generate a monthly or 30 day listing of shadow transits such that a quick glance to see pairings would be quick and easy.  I thought Akkana's JupeSat app would, but it does not.

I just sent a ChatGPT query re shadow transits and the info (if reliable) is very interesting. A quadruple is stated to be impossible due to Callisto's wide and inclined orbit.  I guess, but I'm suspicious.

It also states triples occur one or twice a decade, in fact noting the January 2015 occurrence many of us shared views of at Montebello.

I'll keep checking around for something that provides a better time visibility window.

I also would comment how cool it is to see a moon start glimmering into view, so subtly at first glance to emerge as a perfect little ball.  I think I like reemergence more than disappearance.

Io’s reemergence from Jupiter’s shadow at 9:30 was fun to follow, from when it was just barely visible as a pinprick to full brightness a couple of minutes later.
