I aim to be there between 5 and 6pm.

Does anyone know if I need to contact the rangers to have some kind of toilets available?

My guess is at this point there either there or they are not. They aren’t gonna move Porta potties.

And probably best not to ask. The overflow lot is technically closed, and they let us use it because they know it is useful for us. If we start making a fuss, they will just close it.

In the distant past there was contact information for the rangers on observers.org.  I contacted them.  The porta potties were unlocked.  We are all still allowed to use the overflow lot.

When you arrive at the gate you need to tell them where you will be camping.

The overflow lot is always open for astronomy. People observe from there pretty much every New Moon thru the year.

Sean, you made me look. I have an old number for LSA, (805) 472-2311. Is that the number you called? We can certainly add a phone number for them to the Sites list.

I'm in!  I'll plan on arriving between 6 and 7.

Watch the daytime temperature forecasts. Astrospheric now and the forecast is usually way lower than reality. For instance, it now says 85°F (Fri 3:30pm) when the NSW says its now 95°F. With our current Wx pattern in force, I would plan on LSA being at least 95°F by noon and until 6pm. The Field of Dreams is usually hotter than the forecast because it's topography is in a lower bowl.

Thanks for the warning. Yeah its really hot in Gilroy today.

I called the number.  It is the south shore ranger station. They were finrle with camping overnight in the overflow camp ground as long as the camping fee is paid.  There should be some open porta potties.

I was at LSA south shore last night. When I arrived, I told the gate attendant that I was planning on being where the other astronomers were, and she directed me to the overflow lot as expected. There are porta potties on site, at least six, and I personally verified that at least three of them were unlocked.

It was 95F when I arrived at 6:30pm. It cooled down but never got really cold overnight. Fairly dry as well, my equipment recorded max RH 75% during the night. SQM 21.65 mag/arcsec2. No wind, seeing good.
