Surprisingly good forecast for Wednesday, with excellent transparency.

With family commits on Thursday and not wanting to be a zombie, I'm up for  observing till 22:30, packing and being home before midnight. Going with my 10" f/5.7 to make it an even easier night.

I'll be chasing Herschel 400 and DeepMap 600 targets.

Any takers if the forecast conditions hold to Wednesday?

Coe is good for easy and close to home observing.  Good east and overhead. Beats Montebello easily.  Dark is at 18:23.

Great!

For those who might be interested, there is a day use fee collected by the park HQ, I think it's $8 (or $7 for OF's).  I'll contact the ranger to advise we will want access to the overflow parking lot.

Nice.  Haven't seen you I think since a night at Guacamole.

I'll be contacting the rangers today so the overflow lot is available to us.

Just a note to others who may decide to join in:  It will be rather chilly tonight.  Pack your woolies.  Better to over-prepare than be miserable.

I also expect southbound 101 to be pretty busy with traffic heading out of town.

If it's below 70 I one piece up in a full winter suit, boots and lightweight to heavyweight gloves. If a more active night with multiple scopes the oversize sleeves act as a buffer instead of gloves.

Very good callout. What time do you plan to be there? I would like to arrive not after sunset, which means that I probably need to plan for 90 minutes' travel time from Mountain View.

Sunset is 16:51.  I want to be there an hour before so I can get set up and layered up without racing the clock.  So I'll arrive just before 16:00.  My usual drive there is under and hour, I'm adding another 1/2 hour in case its a jam.  That makes departure for me at 14:30 latest.

Even if it is a jam, East Dunne is one of the first exists through the 101 south congestion.

While it may be slow going, the return home from Coe is always a treat, as it is a short drive without traffic after what is nearly always a satisfying night out.  And, with a warm bed to finish it all off.  A benefit of winter observing!

Hi folks,

I will also join you all at Coe tonight! I have tried calling the visitor center a couple of times since morning but my calls don't seem to be getting through. I was wondering if others were able to get through to the ranger?

I noticed there is a scheduled burning notice on the coe webpage (https://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=561) and wasn't sure if that affects our plans tonight

Best,
Vignesh

Hi Vignish

Glad you're coming too.  I emailed ranger Verhoven.  Email link available in Coe section of tac observing sites, top of the mailing list Google page (or perhaps observers.org now).  John answered my email already today acknowledging that the overflow lot will be ready for us.

Hey, thanks for letting me join you up there spontaneously and unannounced - and for letting me know about observers.org and this Email chain!
It was great to have some people around to enjoy the night sky with and hope to join you all under the stars soon again!

Best,
Daniel
