I hope to arrive before sunset, but I probably won't get there until 8pm or so.

The permit request form does not allow you to request a permit
same-day. I don't know if you can email them and get someone added to
your permit (I've never tried).

Mark is right, the permit that I called in yesterday is the so-called "TAC permit" or "group permit". It allows up to 10 vehicles to be present in the MB parking lot, as long as the permit holder is present. For people who haven't gotten their own personal permits from MROSD, it gives them a chance to observe there, as long as a group permit holder is present. I'm not sure how late I'll stay, but I don't have to get up early on Tuesday, so I'll probably stay until the Milky Way gets reasonably far up and out of the Silicon Valley light dome.
