I recently put my 20+ year old Lumicon oiii filter in my scope and noticed some glare in the eyepiece. I was looking at the veil, and it certainly was more visible with the filter, but the glare was weird. I put in Mark W’s Lumicon oiii of similar vintage and better contrast and no glare! I have two questions.

Why do filters go bad?

What brand oiii filters are people using. I’ve heard there has been improvement in filter technology.

Thanks,

I'm very happy with my Tele Vue Bandmate IIs.

I've been using DGM filters, especially their NPB, which is O-III + H-Beta

you will see a LOT more of the Veil with a NPB. If you look at a color photo of the Veil, the 'pink' areas are H-alpha while the green or bluish areas are O-III.    the NPB will show both visually, as where there's Halpha there's also H-beta.

Spectrum Thin Films did the Bandmates. The owner is an amazing personality. The lab is amazing. I got to go there every year from 2011 to 2015.
