Is anyone else in the bay area picking up colored plastic?

I'd be interested in a sampler pack. If there are a few others who are
interested, may be game to front the cash and do the spooling in
trade.

I'd participate in a group buy.

I just ordered one feach of red, blue, green, and yellow. Priority
mail shipping, the lowest cost option they offer, was $58, for a total
of $378. If we were to divide it up five ways, that would be $75.60
for each person, for one pound of each of the four colors. I'm not
looking forward to the labor of dividing it up, though.

Well, if all goes according to plan, the respooling should be easy. I just won an eBay auction for a wire measure/spooling rig like the hardware stores have. It will be a good experiment, anyway.

Hmm. How many people are in? And, how the hell are we going to cut
it up?!

I'm happy to go in for a share if it helps, or wait until next time if
there are others wanting in.

Eric - I'm in for 1lb of each.

So I guess in my previous posts saying I'd participate I've never committed to a specific amount, so for the record: I'd take a pound of each color.

BTW -- I'm expecting the wire spooling rig that I grabbed off of eBay should show up about a week from today. I'm assuming that will make the job of whacking it up much easier. It has a length counter -- 1 lb of ABS 3mm ABS rod should be right around 200 feet. We'll have to try a couple and weigh them to get calibrated.

Well, that sounds like there are five interested folk.
Eric - the man with the plan who purchased the 4x rolls
Dave N6NZ - the man with the tools
Tox, MakerBlock, and Sparky Bartlett Jewell

Do we have an accord?

(I've got $75.60 with Eric's name on it.)

Dangit. I tried posting a little bit ago.
It sounds like we have 5 people:
Eric - who ordered
Dave N6NZ - who is getting some of the tools to cut

Tox, MakerBlock, and Sparky Bartlett Jewell

Let me know where we can meet up and I'll be read to help and bring my
$75.60.

Thanks,

For my part, if more people are interested, I'm OK with splitting it down below 1lb of each color -- 4 lbs of plastic will take a while to print through :)

Yeah, I don't know why it wasn't showing up when I was typing
earlier.
If others are interested, I'll take less than 1lb of each to make sure
everyone gets some. But, I'll commit to as much as 1lb each for
$75.60 plus help cutting/distributing.

willing to order more, provided that Dave lets us use his wire

I don't have a suitable scale. (A bathroom scale isn't really
suitable.) If no one in the group has one, we can measure the length
of the five-pound roll, and divide that by five.

Makerbot says that the package shipped, but USPS tracking doesn't yet
confirm that it's been picked up, so I'm not sure that it will be here
by the weekend.

Cool!

USPS tried to deliver my wire rig today, but nobody was home to sign for it. I'll pick it up tomorrow. Since there is "some assembly required", I doubt that I can have it ready for a respooling party until after the weekend. My main time to work on it will be Sunday afternoon.

Do we have a plan for when/where to do the respooling?

Today I managed to get the respooler about 80% set up, and should be able to complete that work sometime Sunday. While I expect it to work, there is some chance that it won't work for the ABS rod since it wasn't designed for that -- in which case we will need a plan B.

Another approach would be loop counting - figure out how many loops
are in a spool (more or less), and count div N loops off - have set A
be first loops from color 1, second loops from color 2,etc. Set B be
first loops from color 2, second loops from color 3... End result that
everyone gets roughly same total weight of slightly different
proportions due to differing radii without having to watch a mile
stream by.

Just a thought - don't want to burn Eric's time.
I'm busy this weekend but could make some night this week.

than 1 lb each), I'll order more.

Hi everyone,

I ordered a MakerBot from batch 12, so I should be getting it near the
end of March.
I'm also interested in getting colored ABS, but I can definitely wait
since I won't have a use for it until I put everything together. I'll
probably need only 1 lb of each color to start with, and I'll have a
roll of black ABS from the deluxe kit that I can share if anyone wants
some.

I have to be in San Jose on 3/11 in the afternoon for work, if that
works for anyone.
Also, where are we doing this? Party at Eric's place? Neutral holy
ground Highlander style? A central locational equally inconvenient
for everyone?

My place is not a good choice, as I have *no* space to accommodate
even a small number of people. I can easily bring the spools to
anywhere else in the bay area.

I'm busy on Monday through Wednesday, but other days are OK.

Usually Thursdays would be OK, but I'm tied up on the 11th.

Are any of you guys TechShop members? Maybe we could do it there. My
membership is lapsed, but I should probably rejoin.

I'm a TechShop member. I know Eddy is, too. We could probably do it there. My place is not so good, either, because my garage/shop is all full of "stuff" and there isn't room to work at the moment.

from Techshop.

I am not sure. Did you guys count me in on this round? I sent an email
but i never saw a confirmation.

I replied but it doesn't seem to have made it out. You are number 6
on the list, and Michael Udaltsov is number 7, so we need to either:

1) Divide the spools into less than 1 pound portions. Maybe 0.5 lb.
or 0.75 lb., for those that don't want or need a full pound of each
color?
2) Order more 5-pound spools

I'm fine with either option. I'm leaning toward #2, even if it leaves
me with more filament than I really need.

Note that MakerBot Industries just announced a $12 sampler that is one
pound total of all their ABS colors (natural, black, red, green, blue,
yellow). Anyone that doesn't want

Eddy Vromen and Michael Udaltsov: Menlo Park is a hike for me and I'm
fine with picking up a sampler from MakerBot Industries. If either of
you wants my spot, let me know.
Eric: If Eddy and Michael decide to get plastic elsewhere, I'm still
committed.

No, it's still just sitting here. I'd be perfectly willing to work
with someone to get it split up, but what I haven't had is time to
coordinate things.

I'll be out of town from Thursday until April 5. The best day for me
to do anything about this would be Sunday April 11 or Sunday April 18.

I don't have any room for people here, so we need to do it elsewhere.

Well Michael, I'm going to take you up on your offer. I'm putting together
a repstrap at the Hacker Dojo right now, and we have NO ABS at all.
Black is cool so if you want to drop off a pound or two that'd be highly
appreciated.

I'd be glad to split up my black ABS as soon as I get it, but I don't
know when that will be yet. My MakerBot kit is from batch 12, and
batch 11 just started shipping a few weeks ago after the delays with
electronics. So if you need ABS immediately, perhaps someone else
could share?

christopher brought in some white ABS so it's not urgent. I do want to
